Dave London isn’t one of those speculators who’s investing his greenbacks in a car, putting it away, and banking that it’s going to be a valuable collector prize some day. While that may indeed come true, London’s affinity for his undeniably beautiful and interesting 1987 Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS Aerocoupe goes far beyond dollar signs and trying to get “ahead of the curve” on a car that is likely to gain in stature among collectors.

No, London simply digs the car, loves its NASCAR racing connections, and relishes the opportunity to have one of the few pristine examples of this relatively rare Monte Carlo variant that a lot of buyers appreciated when it was new, but not many preserved.

“My thing was always NASCAR,” said London, a resident of Franklin, N.C. “The cars that came out of NASCAR in the late 1960s and ’70s — the Superbirds and Daytonas and those kinds of cars — forget it. They just got too expensive for me. I was never going to have one of them.

Everything on the London’s Monte Carlo is as authentic as they come with the minor exception of the tires.
Including the 3/4-ton-truck stance. Ghastly. :dgt:

Gah!

I actually kinda like the non-aero versions of those things.
Yup. The Vette-like glass does nothing for me.
GM actually threatened to pull out of Nascar if they wouldn't be allowed to run the Aero coupe. They were regularly getting their asses handed to them by Ford, and both GM and Nascar didn't like it. Nascar wanted them to build 500 or so of each of the Chevy and Pontiac versions, but GM cried, so their buds at Nascar relented.
Ford still kicked their ass afterwards...
My boss just recently sold his non-Aero Monte SS, same colour as this one. His sat at lot lower. Nice car, warmed over 350 crate engine with an absolutely stellar body and paint job. :)

Let's face it, anyone that would throw money at any monte would be better off buying lottery tickets.
Actually, he had a sort of bidding war going on with it. Typical Chevy guys...
It was pretty decent car, though.

i dont mind that gen of monty but that window..GAH

on my way to seattle thuursday i passed a "canam" laguna chev body...i cant say ive ever seen one

A Can Am is a Pontiac LeMans, a '77 to be exact. They were white with a shaker hood, red/orange/yellow striping, and the Can Am logos. Most of the ones I've seen (including a 1-of-2 four-speed car) had a red interior, but black was available as well.

I actually really like the LeMans GT version of that body style with the naca scoops n' stuff.

There's one rotting away under a tarp in Pilot Butte. :-(

Love those Colonnade cars...
69.5, sure it wasn't a Grand Am you saw? The nose is different on those.

I went to high school with a kid that had a LeMans GT, gark green with a white gut. There was also a kelly green '73 Grand Am at the high school across town, that same guy had a really gorgeous black '73 GTO a few years later. One of my best friends had a '75 Grand Am, white with red interior, with a 250 inline six. Cool looking car, but slow as molasses and a total bondo bucket.

I like the 2 door GM G-bodys of that era. I don't like the aerocoupe though. I do love the color combo on that one. A budy of mine has a monty in that color and with the burgundy interior it makes for a nice looking ride.
