Sue Eldred’s first bout with a convertible didn’t go as planned. Her second bout with a convertible is not going the way she thought it would, either.

The Hilbert, Wis., woman had always wanted another ragttop after the brakes on her first convertible went out. When the mechanic told her the car’s frame was too rusty to justify fixing its brakes, she was heartbroken.

“My very first car was a convertible, and I never got to drive it with the top down,” Eldred said. “It was my dream to drive with the top down.”

Her dream was finally realized this summer when she bought a 1973 Ford Mustang convertible. So far, she’s only driven it once with the top down, and she may never do it again. It’s not that Eldred didn’t enjoy the experience; it’s because the Mustang had just 38 miles on the odometer when she bought it, and every turn of the odometer lowers its historic and monetary value.

When I was young and stupid, I wanted my Dad to trade our 73 Charger in for one of these.

I've always liked this body style. I'd like to have one, eventually. along with a Firebird from the similar vintage.

OK, so it's got 60 miles on it. That's kind of neat and all, but I'd drive either drive it or sell it. It's a freakin' six-banger 3-speed car so the value's not sky-high on this thing. The current owner wanted a convertible because she loved driving a convertible, and then she bought one she feels she can't drive? I say drive it. Seriously, how much more value does it have at 60 miles than 6,000 miles, being cursed in multiple ways? It's a later less-popular year, it's green, it's a six-cylinder stripper, and it's green. Though no mention is made of money changing hands, I'm willing to bet the current owner got the short end of the stick overall... and I don't think a non-enthusiast that bought a car solely because it's a convertible is going to keep an "undrivable" decoration around for long. :dgt:

Did anyone else notice that all the owners of this car have been women? Wonder if either is a fat secretary. :hmmm:
