My wife, Marla, and I have long been fans of the Iola Car Show in Wisconsin. We both have displayed many cars there over the years, and I even brought 1960 Plymouth with a matching boat one year. Living in Brainerd, Minn., we have always considered the Iola show to be a fun adventure, not only as our mini summer vacation, but as a special opportunity to enjoy cars we probably won’t see at home and to spend time with both old and new friends at the campgrounds.

It really is a show any old car lover should attend. The swap meet is the perfect spot to find that special item or part that you need, especially if you’re restoring an old car or truck.

Last summer, as usual, we started our Thursday morning with an invigorating ride from the campground on the shuttle. After whisking up and down the hillside, listening to the chugga-chugga of the antique tractor that was pulling us, we were deposited at the Car Corral. We’ve never really been shopping for a car there, but it’s always fun look!

Pretty neat old truck.
At first I thought "What a homely frigging thing!" but the longer I looked at it the more I liked it. :)
Nice to see Chrysler kept the same basic step-side box for well over 25 years...

Funny, I never would have restored this truck. I would have driven it - gladly - just the way it was. It lost something with the two tone and shiny paint...

I think I would have left it alone as well. I think the faded-to-pink was a better color, and I liked the original look with the patina.

As far as the box goes, the same fenders were used on the Utiline box from 1953-'85. There were styles with and without the cutouts for spares but they're identical other than that.

The step side looked great on the later years trucks too... that's what you call getting your money's worth!

Agreed, although I thought they looked a little out of place with the '81 restyle, when the rest of the curves on the truck disappeared. Still, if your design is still being used 30 years hence, you've done quite well as an automotive stylist!
