I think it's OK to use wood, but don't finish it that way. Paint it to match. It ain't your living room!

For wood to be used in the elements, it needs to be totally sealed from the atmosphere. Either with a good quality paint or cover it with fiberglass resin, (which helps get a smooth finish) and then paint.
