I believe it was the summer of 1971 when I first saw the 1954 Pontiac Star Chief. I was at the Julius farm west of Appleton, Wis., one late July afternoon. John Julius and I were standing between the two farm houses when up the slightly hilly driveway rolled the beige Pontiac over the gravel and toward us. My first impression was that the Star Chief was the most elegant machine I had ever laid eyes on. It was also the first time I met Kenny Buttolph, who would go on to work at Old Cars Weekly and Old Cars Report Price Guide.

You have to remember the 1954 Pontiac was only 17 years old at that time and was still three years away from being considered a collector vehicle. Heck, collector license plates were still one year away in Wisconsin! For whatever reason, I can still remember seeing the Pontiac like it was yesterday. The interior still had that leather softness and buckskin odor. The headliner was radiant white with the three chrome-plated bows. The instrument panel was clean and lined with gages, gleaming speaker rings and a working clock. The outside stainless-steel and chrome trim glittered in the western sunset. The grille just dripped with chrome. And, of course, the stately Chief Pontiac ornament lead the way atop a wide silver streak flowing down the hood. I told Kenny, “If ever a time came in the future that you want to sell this car, let me know.”

I'd drive it.. I like the Harley Earl era. The tri-5 Chebbies are a little too prolific, but the rest of the lineup usually drips with class

I had a 55 and a 56, two similar styled from the era. Yea, they did drip with class. And I loved those 4-speed hydramatics in low gear. They would make anything stand up & go off the line, all the way to about 20 mph.

Interesting story, but the color....:dgt:

I kinda like the creamsicle look.

"Oh my God! They killed Kenny!"
"You bastards!"

This story could use a serious application of word economy. I like to hear the story behind a car, and I realize Kenny was his friend, but quit yammering and get on with it already. How about starting with some discussion of the car, beyond the fact that it's a '54 Star Chief that's no longer the original color (a choice about which more than a paragraph was wasted)? What's the story with the engine, transmission, cool options this particular car has, etc.? We're car guys; I don't think any one of us subscribes to "Old Dead Guy Weekly" at the moment.

I like the repaint color much better than the original. I'm with Jass on this story though. Does this thing have an engine? what is it. Does it run nice? Does it have a transmission or are they waiting for one to come from Arizona or California?

I understand it sucks to loose a good friend and I understand that car was a very big part of Kenny's life but I really don't care about all that. Tell me about the car and its options. I am reading about a car after all, or so I thought anyway.
