Better rust remover

Could be. Let's test it out.

I talked to a rep for this company at MOPARFest. http://www.metalrescue.com/

The pitch sounded exactly like the Safest Rust Remover stuff that I like so much - with one major difference that stood out in my mind: the soak times were a lot shorter.

I asked the guy how it compared to the other stuff and he was honest in saying that he hadn't been able to try their stuff out yet, but he could guess at how the stuff worked based on his knowledge of the chemistry behind these types of things.

I bought 2 gallons right there. My reasoning: if it works as well or better and is just as safe, then why the hell not give it a try? Additionally, the Canadian plant is about 20 minutes from my house should I ever need to get more.

Well, I finally got me a round tuit and opened the stuff up to give it a try.

Here's the gallon jug and the bucket I'll use for the soak.

This stuff is as clear as water when you start out.

The instructions say it will turn a lavender colour when exposed to air and it will turn black as it starts to eat up the rust.

Here's what we'll work on. It's the fuel filler neck from my Charger. The end that goes in to the tank is a little cRusty.

Instructions say to clean things up as well as possible. So I did and things cleaned up pretty well with just water and a bristle brush. I had to switch to my cell phone for pics at this point because the batteries in both my cameras were toast at this point.

And then I let it soak. Start time 12:09 PM (lunch break)

At 3 PM the same day (afternoon stretch), it looked like this:

It's interesting to note that this stuff seems very active. That white stuff was kind of effervescent much like you'd expect an acid to be in a similar application. I don't think it really is bubbly though. It's more like the white stuff swished around when I moved the tube.

I might try and rig up a pump and run this stuff through the tube as well. I'll look at that later in the day.

(Fair disclosure: The guy gave me a free t-shirt with the 2 gallons I bought. I got the sense that that wasn't part of the show deal he had going on. It's a nice shirt but it wouldn't sway me in terms of posting something positive if I didn't think it were true. At any rate, the jury is still out on the end results.)

impressive stuff.....that might make me start re-useing some things vs foinding better or making new

I just went out and checked it again. There was some stuff on the "tongue" sticking out of the bottom of the tube that was preventing the remover from doing it's job.
So, I hit with an old toothbrush and rinsed it in water. It's soaking again.
I think if I hadn't missed that stuff, it'd be done now.
That white stuff washed right off too.

I stuck my hand right in the bucket. No residue or smell at all. That might change as it gets used more, but we'll see.

I'm rethinking the pump idea. I'm going to try and figure out how to seal off one end of the tube and then just pour this stuff inside and let it soak.

I bought a gallon of the stuff too- haven't tried it yet- but anything that isn't hurtful to the world in acid is a plus to me!!!!!!!

ill have to keep that in mind , thats even if i can get it here in the states . my buddy is getting me some stuff you spray on rust and it stops it in its tracks . i guess its more of a rust encapsulator .

They have some rust encapsulator as well. I got a couple of small spray bottles of it with the 2 gallons I bought. Jeez I can't remmeber the name. I'll go get 'em in a sec.

As for getting it in the states - the company originates from Michigan. I'm guessing this stuff is made there as they make a point about being Made in USA. I would guess then that the plant here makes some of their VCI wrap products to protect stuff while in storage or in shipping.. etc.

You can order right off of the website and it ships from Michigan.

They were at the Nats in Columbus selling it also in the swap area.
The piece they were working with was nasty and it came out all nice after a short soak. While it was soaking they demonstrated a weld with propane outfit.

you could probably zip tie a HD freezer ziplock bag over the end of it and fill it..heavyest plastic i can think of that "should" take the chemicals..well that or a big condom

This stuff is the cats meow....Ultra One...Quite a few guys fiom other boards us this stuff and swear by it....click on the rotating slide show to see it at work....

Not sure if you can get it up here in the great white north but our US brother surely can.
That's the Safest Rust Remover stuff that I made reference to in my first post and in this thread way back when.. http://www.moparnuts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=9043

I like that stuff. That's why I was ready to try this stuff.

One thing I've noticed so far: the Ultra One stuff feels sticky and leaves a residue.
This stuff doesn't.

This stuff seems to be working a lot faster, too.

I haven't checked on it yet today.

69, I tried a freezer bag and some elastics and tape... It leaked. Never thought of the zip tie, but i was searching for a big enough hose clamp at one point..
I left it sit in the bucket though. The top end of the tube will be nice and clean now..

I'll say this about this stuff: it DOES work faster, but one things is key - clean the parts before putting them in the bath.

I had some parts with some glue and/or some miscellaneous crud covering some surface rust, and the rust wouldn't come off until I scuffed the part a bit. Another soak and everything cleaned up beautifully. Sure, I could have just kept scuffing and abraded the rust away, but there were some small pits that I wouldn't have been able to get to..

I am liking this stuff more and more for the speed, the smell, and the not-stickiness as compared to the other stuff.

Is there a supplier up here in Canada? I am wanting to clean up some parts but don't know where to get this stuff.
