Could be. Let's test it out.
I talked to a rep for this company at MOPARFest. http://www.metalrescue.com/
The pitch sounded exactly like the Safest Rust Remover stuff that I like so much - with one major difference that stood out in my mind: the soak times were a lot shorter.
I asked the guy how it compared to the other stuff and he was honest in saying that he hadn't been able to try their stuff out yet, but he could guess at how the stuff worked based on his knowledge of the chemistry behind these types of things.
I bought 2 gallons right there. My reasoning: if it works as well or better and is just as safe, then why the hell not give it a try? Additionally, the Canadian plant is about 20 minutes from my house should I ever need to get more.
Well, I finally got me a round tuit and opened the stuff up to give it a try.
Here's the gallon jug and the bucket I'll use for the soak.
This stuff is as clear as water when you start out.
The instructions say it will turn a lavender colour when exposed to air and it will turn black as it starts to eat up the rust.
Here's what we'll work on. It's the fuel filler neck from my Charger. The end that goes in to the tank is a little cRusty.
Instructions say to clean things up as well as possible. So I did and things cleaned up pretty well with just water and a bristle brush. I had to switch to my cell phone for pics at this point because the batteries in both my cameras were toast at this point.
And then I let it soak. Start time 12:09 PM (lunch break)
At 3 PM the same day (afternoon stretch), it looked like this:
It's interesting to note that this stuff seems very active. That white stuff was kind of effervescent much like you'd expect an acid to be in a similar application. I don't think it really is bubbly though. It's more like the white stuff swished around when I moved the tube.
I might try and rig up a pump and run this stuff through the tube as well. I'll look at that later in the day.
(Fair disclosure: The guy gave me a free t-shirt with the 2 gallons I bought. I got the sense that that wasn't part of the show deal he had going on. It's a nice shirt but it wouldn't sway me in terms of posting something positive if I didn't think it were true. At any rate, the jury is still out on the end results.)
