Anyone want to be a sounding board?

I'm so pissed off about my job right now, I could fucking scream while pissing on my own shoes. Feel free to call me.

I've been so pissed at mine for quite a while now and have decided that in August after 30 years I will take early retirement and look for something else to putter at and not be so stressed with. If they would have left me be where I was working in Sarnia I may have stayed longer but they moved me to a position where the bull just piled up so high ,that it is time to go.

It's a long story, but the fact of the matter is apparently I now have to do my boss' job instead of him. I'm also evidently responsible for the staffing and scheduling of two stores, instead of the one to which I originally agreed. If I'm saving them a manager wage on another store, I'm thinking my pay needs to be boosted at leat 30%, though 50% would seem fair to me--hell, that's half as much as an actual manager, right?

I've calmed considerably, probably because I was able to handle that which he couldn't but also due to finding out over the course of the day that a man I thought was aggressive and intimidating suddenly turns into a whiny bitch when he feels he's spread too thin. I get irate but I get it done; in two conversations today he reminded me of my cheating ex-wife complaining to me how broke she was after our divorce--and she was getting $650/mo. support from me for one child, welfare, her parents bought her a car and were paying her rent, and she refused to work. I had half a mind to tell him, "Welcome to my world. Pull yourself together!" but he's still my boss, after all.

I'd explain the situation, but typing it out would serve only to re-infuriate me. If it's any indication, I had to hire two people today, and odds are pretty good I'll be hiring another by the end of the week.

Wish I'd seen this earlier. We coulda had a 2 way bitch-fest 'bout wurk.....

I fucked up bad changing gigs last year. Working for great people, but man - some of the other bullshit....

Looking around for something new as we speak. I could go back to the old thing, but I really don't want to return to the 70-90 hour work weeks...getting too old for that.

Sucks to hear you are still facing challenges Doc.

Buck up Doc. At least some of your upper management feels you're efficient and competent enough to take on extra responsibility, whether they tell you that or not. Small consolation, but it does give that extra confidence boost.
It is always surprising to me to find out how spineless and whiny some people can be, like your boss. You never really know someone till you see them under some sort of pressure. Some, like you, can handle it. Some obviously can't, like your boss. Yoy don't have to work with him on a daily basis do you? I'd end up kicking his ass if I had to put up with a whiner.
I know exactly how you feel. I've found myself many times having to do work that wasn't any where near my job description, if ever I had one. Being the boss in a body shop was easily the worst carreer decision I ever made, bar none. Most of the extra work I ended up doing was work that I had paid an employee to do. I ended up working for free if I was lucky, Being unlucky meant I was out of pocket on the job.
Things could be worse. A very good freind here in town manages a fairly busy parts store. His numbers are among the best in the chain, yet he, at the decree of the suits above him, has to cut 20hrs a month from his full time staff and limit the part timers to no more than 12 hrs a week. He is already short staffed, he fears this move will drastically harm his customer service.
Drop me a PM if you want to chat for awhile.

Good point, restoman. As usual, I fail to look at the silver lining which in this case is that my boss has faith in me to make things happen. Thank you for that.

The funny thing is, we had our nationally-acclaimed "Tech Expo" this past weekend, which our franchise chain invented and presents every year, and I came back feeling pretty positive about my gig (more on that in an upcoming thread)... but I still feel that if I have to staff and schedule two stores, there needs to be some kind of compensation increase--and a considerable one. Is that not fair?

Also, the stress level that had subsided started to go back up today when I was informed that one of my potential hires--a good kid, reminiscent of Lance from Esky who went from part-time driver to store manager in about 17 months--cannot be hired because his driving record is outside the acceptable standards. This kid's been begging for a job for over a year, now has his automotive technician's associate degree, and has proven himself exceptionally bright. I finally get an opportunity to put him on the payroll, and he has one too many tickets right now. I'm keeping his application at the front of the stack, and when I get clearance, he's got a job. It broke my heart to tell him we couldn't hire him, both for him and I. The kid's got real potential. Now I have to find someone else to take that job. It's frustrating. The bright spot is that the guy I can hire has several years behind a counter, so he's only really got to adapt to our computer system and he'll be good to go. Great personality, friendly, and knowledgeable.

Here's the entire story: Corporate bought a privately-owned store, expecting that the manager would stay on. She didn't. They had no Plan B, so they took one of my countermen--the one that's my best worker. Monday, my other counterman quit; he gave me a week's notice. I'm happy for him and am glad he feels he's bettering himself, but he left me in a bit of a bind with the short notice. He didn't have a choice, though, and I don't hold anything against him personally. One of my drivers (Sarah) left on vacation for 8 days today and the other (Cathy-Lee) has a limited schedule in my store because she works another job. That would have left me alone in the store after 1PM Monday, all day Tuesday, and after 3PM Wednesday and Thursday of next week. So, I call my boss and tell him, "You need to figure out something for Norway." I told him the situation, and his response was, "I suggest you start making phone calls and working out a schedule that will staff both stores." Wait a minute--it's the district manager's job to make sure the store has a manager, and that manager's job to adequately staff it. It's not as if I didn't already have my hands full trying to re-staff my own store with interviews, driver's-license checks, background checks, scheduling drug tests and physicals--he has to whine to me about how thin he's spread? I am doing all of this on top of the day-to-day running of the store, for Pete's sake. On top of that, since corporate had no Plan B for the store they just acquired, I'm supposed to re-staff that one as well, out of my own store?! Only because restoman pointed it out, I appreciate the faith he has in me... but come on. This is relatively insane. I barely have time to provide the customer service on which I pride myself. I must say, I'm a tad irate at corporate for not having an alternate game plan on this newly-acquired location, and I'm even less impressed that I'm supposed to work it out on a week-to-week basis.

From the looks of it, I'll be doing all the managerial legwork for the store for the foreseeable future since they still don't have a manager. They knew they were buying that store possibly as far back as October, and as of today they still have no plan in place as to how they're gonna staff it... so it falls on me.

And people wonder why I drink?!

Well, when my head isn't up my ass, it's in the clouds. So I guess I got pretty good at looking at Silver Linings. :)

Corporate has big plans for that store. You're gonna do all the work and they're gonna take all the credit. Tread lightly, sounds to me that you might be becoming someone's lacky.

Or it could be a test for the next level in the chain. Do well in the test and other doors may open.:2thumbs:

Dr Hugh will do an excellent job, and will be rewarded by the DM being promoted to a director's position. The good Dr will still be where he is, but a new DM will be brought in for him to train.

My wife says I'm a bitter old man full of hate. She also realizes that whenever I've left a company, 2 - 3 years later it folds.

I'm looking now. Someday....

If I left, the company would not fold. However, there's a pretty-good chance the store would, and it's likely the new acquisition would circle the drain and ultimately fail. They were talking about closing my store before I took control, suddenly it's becoming a jewel in the crown.

Then I wish you would have taken over our local Auto Value, it shut down last month. :doubt: Ooooooh, but wait, an Advance moved into town, at least I have a place I can get air fresheners.

Noooooooo... That's what Wal-Mart's for :)

I would argue to receive some compensation for the tasks your performing. I honestly don't find it fair. Funny I say that because that's how it was when I was in he military. More responsibility didn't give you more money... only more tasks while the higher-ups would relax kicking their feet up. I know how you feel, Doc. When I said enough was enough with taking care of other people's work along with mine, my commanding officers would have a meltdown and try to butter me up. I didn't fall for that poop.

My thoughts Ed Zachary.

I know it's of little value but, if I were closer, I'd be asking for a part time gig. the PO has cut back my hours now that the snow has gone.
