All in one night?!

Dr.Jass

Pastor of Muppets
Valentine was an absolute shit last night.

She peed in the house not once, not twice, but three times. Twice right in front of me.

She chewed a hole in my wall.

She chewed on and therefore destroyed some baseboard.

She ran away three times. Between the second and third time, she blatantly hunkered down and took a shit in my living room, right in front of me, then bolted out the front door, knocked the screen door open and was gone. Maybe a minute had elapsed from the time she came in, shat on my floor, and vanished. By that time, I was so pissed off and frustrated with her my attitude was, "Good riddance!" She went to my friend Tina's house the last time. Tina called me several times last night but I'd gone to bed out of frustration after cleaning up the shit. I was so pissed off at that dog I don't think I'd have been able to deal with her reasonably.

I went and got Valentine from Tina's early this AM. Apparently she didn't like being tied up outside all night. Lesson learned? We'll see.

She is very lucky that she's not at the pound right now. I love her dearly, but last night was simply ridiculous.

I could understand the behavior better if I'd been neglecting her yesterday, but we played for probably an hour or more after I got home from work at 3PM (a couple of hours earlier than normal), and later I took her for a walk. The last vestiges of the Alpha Pup manifesting themselves? Who knows?

First off, Doc, how old is she and what breed? Were there any T-storms or wind.....any kind of strange weather around you last night? Animals are very sensitive to changes in barometric pressure, and many dogs are very phobic to storms. Some will be absolutely terrified by them......trust me, I bin dere! Has she exhibited this kind of "off the wall" behaviour before? Previous to this, has she been well house-trained? There could be all sorts of reasons that she has done this, and they can sometimes be very hard to sort out. If you do love her, don't give up on her. You may need to work with her, and possibly get help.....first step would be to explain what happened to your vet and go from there.

Just tryin' to help Bud........ :toot:

Doc, I think you would truely miss her if she was not around anymore. They all piss us off at times but it is all the rest of the lovin and friendship that helps you forget the nights like last night. The joy you have had with her til last night and what is still to come is irreplaceable. She will always be closer to you than anyone else because she has a unconditional love for the one who gives her the home and love you do. This was just a small speed bump in a long and winding road to who knows where and she will always be ready to be at your side without question. I know our lives would have an empty space if our 2 Goldens were not here anymore.

have to agree with possibily of storm stuff..had a black shep that was like that..he would piddle all over the place litteraly peeing while on the run whenever a storm was around...as he got older he would just cry and hide

It's a lot like kids. Keep working through it. Hotrod went through a very similar stage. He came through it, and is a cool dog.

No storms, no weather of any sort. No storms today that would have been indicated by a drop in barometric pressure last night.

By the measure of friends and family that have been around her, she's extraordinarily well-trained for a dog of less than 7 months including potty training. I kennel-trained her in a week, for the most part I had her potty trained in three. She ordinarily sits and waits for me to pass through a door before she does, which is why the bolting-through-the-screen-door thing was essentially the final straw. I cleaned up more mess last night than I have in any week since she's been here, excepting the week after she got fixed. She was very sick that week; one night I actually thought she might die. Other than that, she's been a very-good dog. She's never chewed on walls or trim before, yet as of last night I have to break out the patching plaster and figure out a way to fix the damaged trim (can't buy it anymore).

She's very smart, but very rambunctious as well. I attribute that to her being the rare combination of alpha and runt. She was the first born--the absolute boss of the litter--and yet the smallest of the 7. I've not personally seen that combo previously. She wouldn't roll over and let me scratch her belly for over a month though she's a big fan of it now. She didn't want to be submissive... and I'm still the only person that is allowed to do it.

Overall, she's a good girl, but her behavior last night had me at wit's end and was completely inexplicable. I understand mistakes and accidents, but that's more in one night than I've ever endured with any dog in the course of a week. My previous dog, Abi, never pulled anything like Valentine's stunts of yesterday nor did the dogs we had in my youth.

Don't get me wrong, I love her dearly. It was just a lot to take in one evening.

I know this is a long shot, but what about the spiritual dweller in your house? Dogs have senses we don't. Might sound nuts, but it might explain odd behavior patterns.

Hang in there, she'll get you on to her way of thinking. :)
We're kinda going through the same with Lola-girl here. She's great most of the time, but some days is wound tighter than an armature! She tries to dominate old-dog and he's such a mellow old sot, she gets away with it most times, which leads her to think she can rule the cats as well. They don't take well to that, which winds her up even more.
Lola chews frickin' near everything thats available, except for the walls. She tried to gnaw on one of our dining room chair legs. That didn't work so well for her, so after getting tossed out on the side porch she decided to try her luck with the aluminum door threshold. She has several serious dents in it now. The railings, solar garden lights, gazebo frame, garden hoses, her wading pool, and ANYTHING made of wood that lands in the yard, including a cupboard door that I was sanding a couple weeks ago. :( None of it is safe.
She has no fear of anything we've tried so far to tame her behaviour, other than the spray bottle of water I keep by the BBQ. For a water dog who LOVES water, she hates being sprayed with it.
But, dogs are always glad to see you, even if they are total shits. :)

JC, that occurred to me but I have a hard time believing Kate could give her so much trouble. She didn't seem scared or nervous whatsoever through any of it, and if Kate's got her trained better than I do I would love to know the spiritual reward system. Funny that you mention it, though, since Valentine's the only dog that's ever been comfy in this house since I've owned it. Cassie, Jake, Roscoe, Logan and Chubbs don't like this place; Logan and Chubbs flat-out refused to even come in the door. Cassie is Stretch's dog, he can vouch for that. Mopar_man knows about Jake's issues in while Jake was in my care. Roscoe will come in and hang out, but like other dogs avoids my kitchen.

Restoman, Valentine has rarely been that much a handful other than last night... but she's the only pet and I'm the only master. It's just she and I, and the rules are very clear. Today she's been an absolute angel, and a little while ago she was lying at my feet upside-down and sound asleep. No one's ever seen that except me, and unless I get a picture of it I don't expect anyone ever will. Other than me, she's spent the most time with my friend Tina. In Tina's presence she won't even lie on her side unless I'm there; rolling on her back is literally something only I've ever seen. The Force is strong in this one... she will not be easily turned. :D

this actualy sounds a bit like the briteny we had...she..was an angel and a bitch...biggest damned briteny spanial ive ever seen..papered pure bread..the size of an average rot and built like a brick on thin spanial legs......her way or the hwy at times...and swatting her ass well due to flea alergeys she loved that...ove the years we have all heard the jokes of biting a dog to show your dominance..ive done it..it does work but theres 3 spots...the cheeks the ear and the muzzle....sometimes youve gotta get down right mean and nasty about things..these are animals after all and sometimes youve gotta go after there instincts..i generaly only break out the bitting if im nipped at durring punishment or extreem cases..but you have to be alpha or your screwed...she may actualy be testing how far she can push you..she is young enuf to still be pulling that game....much like kids nip the problem in the ass now or be walked on later

as for the wall..from what ive seen and been around dogs tend to chew onlly when there lacking something..be it attention, lonely, to much energy(needed worked or ran) or flat out bored...it just takes finding the cause as well as something they just cant seem to get enuf of chewing on...with maxx..it was rubber brake parts and body mounts and wire wheels and brushes..and an atv tire...ginger the bitch..nyla bone vinilla, bear nyla bone chocolate...this dumb dane..watter bottles
