Advice needed... (serious advice)

Jester is trying his hand at painting automobiles and would appreciate advice on the following things:

What's the best compressor for the least amount of coin one can use? looking to spend under 500 bucks, unless I'm dreaming...

also looking for a good value HPLV gun and a good type/brand of paint and primer/sealer to use.

I have a large carport. What's the best way to convert that cacksocker into a spraybooth?

Tried painting at a GM Dealership years ago and I was pretty damn good :)

Just don't have a clue what they were using.

What else do I need to purchase? Thanks guys! this is the bestest site on the net.

DO NOT buy an "oil-less" air comp they simply dont survive or keep up and are generaly loud ..generaly you want a moderate sized comp thats capable of multiple air tool use at the same time to keep up with the demand of painting

converting your carport is fairly easy get some 4 mil plastic to sheet the entire inside are of it or finish frame it with sheetrock or plywood..i like useing the 4 mil plastic over even the rock or wood as its disposable..get yourself 2 BIG fans and some cheap furnace air filters to cover them both with...put 1 at one end blowing in and the other at the other end sucking out....with the filters in place no crap gets in and the paint doesnt get over sprayed out onto other stuff

you get an answer on the hlvp let me know too as im looking for one as well

Yes.

Don't cheap out on a compressor, that one should do fine. 60 Gallon is a nice size and you need the volume of a bigger tank for painting. It has some nice features similar to the big ones we have at the shop.

I don't know chit aboot spray guns...so I am done here. [smilie=a:

you can actualy get away with a small tank compresor "if" its been reworked from other parts...ive got what would be considered a roofers compresor(dual 3foot 8inch tanks or about that) but its got the motor and comp unit off a big boy(120/240 5hp motor with a dual piston single head)....portibility but sprayer capable even with a crapy gun thats an air hog

seriously dont cheep out on the comp and stay the hell away from oilless..an oiless 60gal still cant paint for crap

like the 1st 3rd and 4th..not a fan of C&H but heard good things

350lbs! [smilie=2: That'll be fun to set up. This is pretty much the best deal I could find on a decent compressor. Campbell Hausfield and their "peak hp" claims just bug me.

if any canadians know of better deal(s), please lemme know! otherwise it'll be big yellow in the shed thing.

oiless seems ok for blowing up tires... :) But I would like to run power tools and such. Seems to be a lot of options out there, but not a lot of quality under $1000[smilie=e:

You're only gonna get what you pay for....

If you are serious about doing this, you're gonna need serious equipment....

I actually looked at that very compressor today, at Forest City surplus. Looks like shit. Painted poorly, fitted poorly etc. Sorry. :(

the first link or the Yellow Iron Horse one?

what works well for everyone else?

I'm no expert but:
60 gal 5hp min. you need the volume unless you want to spend alot of time waiting for pressure to build so you can resume painting. (don't ask how I know)
Buy a GOOD gun. not a cheapy
Devilbis, SATA etc.... no name guns are for primer.
You guys got Tractor Supply in Canada???

Sold a 5hp 35 gal couldn't keep up with painting.
Bought 7.5 hp 60 gal gets most of a car done before having to repumpup.

Devillbis Finish line gun I like alot.

Looks like a good deal to me! thanks! [smilie=e:

*orders it up, waits patiently for 14 days*

time to get a compressor [smilie=a:

My dad paints wit an INGERSOL RAND. 60gal/ many hp....

Works good with impact guns too.. [smilie=e:

.

Hey Smuggler, do ya have any electric motor or compressor repair shops around? Maybe even an industrial equipment shop might have what ya need.
I just happened to call one near my house and asked if they had any compressors for sale. Just so happened they did, so I gave um $300 for a 60 gal 7hp repaired compressor. It's worked fine so far.

Jester, you'll be happy with the DeVilbiss guns. My apprentice painter-dude has both of them and he likes the way they work.
Where ever you get your compressor from, it'll be CFM ratings that you'll be concerned with. Basically, get one with the highest CFM rating you can find and you won't be disappointed. CFM means Cubic Feet per Minute, it's the true measure of a compressor and will determine if you're going to run out of air half-way thru your paint job.
Trust me, that sucks.
You would want something with a minimum of 14 CFM @ 100 PSI if you plan on doing any amount of painting. If you're in a residential area, 220 volt single phase is likely all you'll be able to use.
60 gallon tank is a good size and is pretty common.

I have never met a person who has said either of the following to me:
  • "I bought too much welder."

"This compressor is way more than I need."
Keep this in mind... you'll always eventually find a way to max out tools with a duty cycle of any kind. :D
