340 deck

I have my 340 block at the machine shop. (Again)
They machined the deck and noticed some plugs in the deck which he assumed were coolant passages.
Is this normal? Or did someone do something strange?
I have not been at machine shop to look or take a pic.
Maybe next week I can swing out that way for pics

o.0 ive only had my hands in 2 or 3 340s and dont remember seeing anything like that, hell ive kicked around atleast 2 bare blocks, so i did a google of images and still turned up nothing of plugs in the deck, i cant even fathom why youd do this short of trying to modify oiling or coolant flow

I've never seen plugs in the deck. I have had my hands on a few 340 blocks. I have a '68 on my engine stand waiting to end up in my Valiant. I'm very curious. I'd love to see pictures.

Here is a photo.
On the lifter side 3rd and 4th piston hole. There is the bolt hole then above that is a blanked out hole.

The only time I've seen anything like that ,it was a desperation repair trying to stop a crack from going any further on a super rare vintage engine block. My paternal grandfather was an old school Machinist[started out as Blacksmith]and did some amazing stuff to keep people's old gear running for them.

the crack did not penetrate into any cooling passages and the car only got driven once or twice a year . The last that I heard, the old beast was still working fine.

There's nothing there to plug, so I'm not sure what that's about. It's hard to tell if it's just a crappy spot-face or an actual plug, but either way its existence makes no sense. That's about the last place in the world a 340 would crack, and there's no reason to spot-face that area. None of the 10 small blocks in my garage look like that; 8 of them are 340s.
