1971 Plymouth Barracuda - $68,900 - Grand Rapids, MI - GR Auto Gallery is pleased to present this 1971 Plymouth Barracuda for purchase. The redesign in 1970 for the 3rd generation of Barracuda removed all commonality with the Valiant and the new E-body version of the ''Cuda'' was born. With this new redesign and new body, along with the release of the Dodge Challenger on the same platform, the Barracuda was no longer anything resembling an economy car. The Barracuda was all Mopar muscle.
This car was sold brand new for $4,152.50 at the Hamtramck plant and is one of only 9 cuda's to be a convertible, with a 383 and upgraded automatic transmission. This car was purchased with many upgrades, separating it from the base model. Upgrades include front disc brakes, power brakes, console, torqueflite transmission, high impact paint, 383 cid engine with a 4 barrel, racing mirrors, variable speed wiper/washer, undercoating, aerodynamic rear spoiler, power convertible top, radio-solid state am, power steering, 3 spoke steering wheel, rallye road wheels and raised white letter tires.
This cuda's comes with a laminated window sticker, factory track sheet, and fender tag and broadcast sheet. The orange paint shows well and all the trim remain in good shape and accent the car well. The interior shows well and looks great. We took this car on a road test and it runs and shifts as it should. This mopar is truly something special and a must have for any enthusiast.

This is actually a pretty decent car, other than the stupid "Auto Grip" shifter, hacked-up panels to fit speakers, and the $40 Grant steering wheel. However, for seventy large I would expect not only those glaring errors fixed, but also I'd like to see the grille painted the correct color (should be argent), and the added "'cuda 383" emblems have no place on the car either since this is not a BS27N 'cuda but a base Barracuda with some pretty awesome options. The door-jamb decal is clearly a reproduction, and not a very good one... or should I say "too good" since the typewritten letters are always a little muddier in appearance. The Rallye cluster is an early '72 assembly, and the re-screening of the rear defog switch to say "TOP LIFT" is horribly done. This leads me to believe this car had a standard cluster originally, a fact borne out by the lack of an N85 on the data tag. The data tag also lacks the code for disc brakes, meaning it was an 11" drum car--but I'd make the same upgrade, tag be damned.

The underhood and trunk patina inspire confidence, though. Other than some minor details those areas seem to be pretty original, or maybe hellaciously-old restoration work. Interesting side note: This car was sold new in Canada.

Personally, I think they're high on the price, but a droptop E with a factory HP engine? Who knows anymore. If the numbers match, they might just get close to it.
