1970 Dodge Challenger - Auction - Mill Hall, PA - This is a “rare” 1970 Challenger T/A 340 Six Pack. The car has completed a rigorous nut and bolt factory correct rotisserie restoration earlier this year. Its professional results are nothing short of concourse judging ready! There were only 2,399 T/A’s ever built in 1970 which was the only year they were produced. They were made over a 5 week production run between March 10th and April 17th 1970. This allowed Dodge to professionally race their new Challenger in the Trans Am circuit. This is where the name T/A came from. Out of the 2,399 made this is 1 of only 989 factory 4 speed close ratio transmission cars, with the famous Hurst “Pistol Grip” shifter, examples ever made. Before the restoration was started I acquired an official national concourse judge’s guide book. It is about 6 inches thick and goes over everything about E body cars especially T/A and AAR built cars. It was used during the entire restoration start to finish so I could be sure the car would be 100% concourse correct in every way possible. I will have the book with the car at the auction, so if anyone has any questions about what was done they can see what the judges look, for which was exactly matched.
The Challenger T/A was not your ordinary small block Mopar. The T/A's were unique and came with some rare items. Hemi fenders were used to fit the big F60-15 series Polyglas tires. In back, torque boxes were welded to the body just ahead of the Special heavy duty rear leaf springs, which raised the rear end to make room for a Trans Am type exhaust system with side outlets and the G60-15 tires- one of the only cars to come with different size tires from the factory. The T/A's carried heavy duty suspensions from the Hemi/440 six pack cars which had K frame with skid plate, larger torsion bars & special front and rear stabilizer bars, heavy duty shock absorbers with Quick-ratio steering. The engine had special blocks only for the T/A's which were stronger with reinforced main webs and filled pan rails over the regular 340 block. The car also had special heads and valve train. The cars all came with the N96 option. Despite the "Six Pack" carburetion and a host of internal reinforcements with having 10.5:1 compression , the T/A's output carried the same 290hp rating as the regular four-barrel 340s, for insurance purposes, though TRUE output reality was near 350 Hp.
The car is finished in its original rare sought after Dark Burnt Orange Metallic. It also came from the factory with a matching Burnt orange vinyl bucket seat interior. This is a very original sheet metal car that spent most of its life in California, which I have documentation of. The uni-body chassis structure possesses original body date stamps, factory spot welds and factory crimp points all over the body. The quarters, complete floor, trunk floor, inner fenders, doors, cowl, radiator support, etc. are ALL factory original sheet metal. The car also still retains its original fiberglass hood. The VIN stamps in the radiator support and cowl are still present. This is also an ALL original drivetrain car. The complete engine (block, heads, intake, all 3 carbs, exhaust manifolds, distributor, starter, water pump, etc.), 4 speed transmission, and rear end are the original components from the factory with the partial matching VIN stamp on both the engine block and transmission as well. The car still has its original VIN tag, original fender tags and also has the original factory broadcast sheet, which was found in the car. Other factory options the car came with include; 3.91.1 ratio Sure Grip rear, center console, rally wheels, and black Vinyl top.
This is believed to be a 34,614 original mile car and there were many original parts restored and reused, such as: rear leaf springs, rear 11” special brake drums, special one year only master cylinder, both calipers, and 2 piece rotors are just a small list. These parts are usually replaced during the years but not on this original car. There was also many NOS factory parts located and used for example: all 4 center caps, all 4 wheel trim rings, factory assembly line oil filter, Anco metal holders with correct black knob “Turtleback” blades, fuel tank sending unit, voltage regulator, outside door handles both sides, date code correct 4001 and 4002 wide flute GE headlights, side marker lights, and idle solenoid are just some.
The car has been all sorted out and everything works as it should with NO issues.
This is, without a doubt, one of the BEST 1970 Challenger T/A’s in the country! 1970 Dodge Challenger T/A
