1969 Dodge Polara - $10,500 - Troy, MI - 1969 Dodge Polara - 2 door convertible with Plum Crazy purple exterior paint and black convertible top. The interior is white vinyl with bench seating and column shifter. The engine is a 383/4 barrel/ V8 crate motor with only 5K miles. The transmission, also new,(5K miles) is a 3 speed automatic. Factory options include power steering and brakes. The car has an AM radio. This car was restored several years ago with sheet metal. The car has a new power top with a new motor and a new windshield.

Where does one get a 383 crate motor? The color looks like ass on a '69 and the R/T emblems are just stupid. I guess that's not too much to fix if you don't mind paying for a repaint.

So this guy is a B-body wannabe, he wishes he had a '69 'net R/T ragtop in plum crazy.

The only"383" available in crate form is the 450ci 383-based stroker. Unless he bought a replacement from Mopar about 20 years ago. :rolleyes:
 
I'm not often what you'd call a "purist", but I hate Plum Crazy on anything prior to '70. It just looks wrong, because it is wrong. Then there's the fact that the color's been done to death.

The 450ci engine is based on a 400, is it not? That would be like .120" over on a 383.
 
It depends on the overbore, though. A 451 is a 4.375" bore, which is actually .035" over the stock 4.34" bore of the 400. The biggest you can go with a 440's 3.75" stroke on a 383 is 438 cubes, if you don't mind the iffy .060" overbore. Going to a 3.95" stroke (offset-ground 440 crank) or a 4.15" stroke both put you well over the 450-inch number unless you use the offset grind with a virgin-bore 383 (448 inches).

Regardless, no one is casting new low-deck blocks of any kind last I checked. To me, a "crate engine" means all-new everything, including the block.
