Over the years I've heard the poly's referred to by a few different names, wide block, 'big block' 318, 'early' 318.

so have i but not a "y" block...292/312 ford....but i can see how "wide" might get confused with Y...but ....i thought the "early" 318s didnt share anything with the later ones.....but i never really looked too close at them...that looks like a normal 318 to me

Just about everything below the head gaskets is the same, except for some minor differences in the block and obviously the pistons for the polyspheric chambers. The crank interchanges, the rods are the same as a 273 and '70-older 318, and I think even the water pump, balancer, and pulleys interchange (except the balancer on a 360). The A and the LA are very similar, actually, just like the RB and the Hemi.

Yes, everything above the head gaskets is different. I think the distributor is the same as a later 273/318 unit as well... or at least, it would work in one. I don't remember anything strange about the one out of the Poly I had (a '66).

  • Parts interchangable between poly 318 and LA engines;
  • Thermostat
  • Thermostat housing
  • Internally balanced 273-318-340 harmonic balancers
  • Valve springs, retainers and keepers
  • Main bearings (NOT 360 though)
  • Rod bearings
  • Crankshafts (reground 360's included)
  • Flywheel
  • Starter, both standard and high torque
  • 318 LA ring set
  • timing chain and sprocket
  • fuel pump
  • oil pump
  • oil pan (not 360)
  • distributor pump drive gear
  • distributor, standard points or electronic

The camshaft will work, but the timing's wonky... kind of like putting a 440 cam into a Hemi, or vice versa.

it looks like the timing cover is the same too

One of them has an additional bolt hole, (that can be plugged and used), but they won't interchange the other way. And I can't remember which is which.
