1957 AMC Metropolitan - $24,950 - Bainbridge Island, WA - 1957 Metropolitan Coupe
Mac’s Motor City Garage, August 15, 2016, in an online feature on the Metropolitan, said, “Everyone loves the quirky little Nash Metropolitan, quite possibly the most adorable automobile ever produced.”
This award-winning 1957 Metropolitan is perfectly and authentically restored.
It won “best in class” at the 2013 Forest Grove Concours d’elegance. At the 2015 Metropolitan Owners’ Club of North America International it won the “William Frajole’s People’s Choice Award” and was “Concours Class Gold Certified”. It is one of only five Metropolitans to be “Gold Certified”.
A ground-up, rotisserie restoration was completed by Walt Johnsen, The Auto Shop, Bainbridge Island, WA. Mr. Johnsen restorations have won numerous awards at Pebble Beach. Every detail from the engine color to the ashtray was thoroughly researched. Every exterior panel was painted the year-accurate coral red or snowberry white. All glass is original and in perfect condition. The hounds tooth upholstery was done by the world famous Metropolitan interior specialist Shannon Crutcher. Electrical wiring, door handles, gas tank, gaskets, keys and locks, fuel pump, water pump, fan belts, are exact reproductions or NOS. The bumpers were re-chromed. The engine, transmission and brakes were rebuilt. Original parts, including the radio, radiator, and heater were reconditioned. The tires, though radials, are exact replicas of the original wide white-walls.
To be “Gold Certified” by the Metropolitan Owners’ Club of North America this car had to be extraordinary; it is. Curiously, following the Nash/Hudson merger, the 1957 Metropolitan was the first year the “Met” was not called a Nash; hence, the “M” on the grill replaced the Nash emblem. It is still adorable!

It certainly looks like a right and proper restoration. Not my cup of tea, of course, but I know there's a rabid Met following. If this is the best of the best, or near to it, it's kind of hard to argue with the price tag. It seems realistic for a concourse award winner.

This is one of the times where the color combo & cuteness factor will appeal to the feminine gender. And I feel sorry for their male counterparts that will have to explain why it's in their garage.
