1939 Plymouth P7 - $10,500 - Belchertown, MA - It's rumored Walter P. Chrysler chose the name Plymouth to represent "the endurance and strength" indicative of the fortitude of the first Pilgrims in the new world. Looking at this Plymouth P7 Two Door Touring Road King, I imagine you can see it, emulating what he stated.
Representing a older restoration, this 2 Door Touring Sedan P7 Road King originated from a estate, last registered in 1993 according to the antique license plate affixed to it when I acquired it. It is a lovely, driver quality car which which runs and drives fabulous.
Refinished in a rich two stage Aviation Blue, the finish shows nicely, with evidence of some bubbling to the rear lower valance below the trunk and a small spot on the left rear quarter, just aft of the door and in the center. Very manageable. Some minor, almost indistinguishable minor checking appears on the tops of the right and left rear fenders. You have to look hard and in the right light to see it. Otherwise ,the overall appearance of the Plymouth is very respectable and pleasing as is seen in the pictures.
Powered by a 121 cubic inch L Head six cylinder engine, rated at 82 H/P , the rebuilt engine runs smoothly and quietly, with no unusual noises, or smoke. Its three speed manual transmission with steel gears for 1939 is quiet and shifts smoothly, as is the differential. It's now 18 gallon fuel tank provides greater range than previous years, although fuel economy is probably not even in the discussion when purchasing such a classic. The Plymouth's tires are bias ply with 3" whitewalls, offsetting the car nicely. The Road King tracks and steers nicely with no "pull or drift" or excessive steering play.
Recent servicing included oil replacement with Pennzoil 10/30 with ZDDP zinc/phosphorous, coolant flush, new spark plugs, complete chassis lubrication, all gear oils changed, brake inspection and adjustment with a front wheel bearing repack, and professional detailing with a Carnauba wax protective finish.
All the lights and controls work as designed, and the 1939 body /chassis for all Plymouths models now incorporated the intergated and very architecturally interesting headlamps and statuesque grill. All the Plymouths glass is in excellent condition with the exception of a small one inch crack emanating from the base of the right rear window. Interior upholstery, carpet, and headliner are in excellent conditon.
Kindly bear in mind this is a now 75 year old vehicle, which has undergone a previous restoration, and represents a wonderful ,driver quality vehicle which can be pretty much driven anywhere. It is without question, fun to drive, and certainly unique in its appearance.
In conclusion, I suggest a personal review of Road King, prior to purchase. The P7 will be sold as is, where is, with no warranty expressed or implied, and with a registration, given the older vehicles were not titled, but maintain a registration only.
