Just Picked Up My 2nd Chrysler !

Hi !

Matthew here out in Mesa, Arizona. My first car was a 1951 Chrysler Windsor Deluxe, 2dr, Black, from North Carolina. She was a tank but the nicest car in my high school parking lot for sure. Little older now and just picked up my 2nd mopar. She's a 1969 Chrysler Newport, 2dr HT w/ a 383. Its a barn find with 70k orig and 0 rust. All around in great condition, just needs some tuning up and electrical diagnostics. Very excited to get going on it and hope this group can be helpfull when I have q's.

Ask away. There are a lot of smart people here ready to help.
They just helped me get my boat home after some electrical gremlins. A question was asked, a few possibilities were examined and I had a couple of things to try. One of them worked and life is good.

I had a '69 Newport Custom in the mid-late '80s. One of the cars I wished I'd never gotten rid of.

Getting started on restoring the paint on my car. Hit a fender with some rubbing compound by hand and the paint just soaked it up. Had to re-apply and rub off wet to get it clear. Went through 2 old undershirts that came out black. Reached out to an old school body guy I know and he recommended Muriatic Acid to remove the decades of build-up/grime. Any thoughts on that or recommendations for restoring an original paint that hasn't been kept up in decades? Thx in advance..
 
Wash it with warm water and a good quality soap designed for cars, towel dry it (don't wash in the direct sun) then go over it thoroughly with a clay bar and lube.
Don't use rubbing compound by hand, it's generally far too abrasive for hand use.

Is the car original paint?

Muriatic acid is best left to concrete guys...
 
I used CRC Hyrdro Force Industrial degreaser to clean two decades' worth of pine tar off my '92 Dakota. I used with the "car wash" nozzle attachement of my pressure washer so it was diluted with water by the machine, but you could mix it similarly to car-wash soap and get similar results. I got the whole truck "soapy", let it sit for a minute, then used the low-power "rinse" nozzle. I couldn't believe the results. Pine tar is normally a total bastard to remove, but not in this case. I'm sure the pressure washer was a lot more effective than a garden hose would be, of course. It did not harm the paint on the truck but it can if left too long, and don't use a rinse nozzle with higher pressure than a car wash. It's the best general-purpose cleaner/degreaser I've used, and I've tried just about everything. Leaves Purple Clean/Purple Power, Simple Green, Castrol Super Clean, Davies DC99, etc. in the dust. The jug can be had locally for around $25 and for most uses, you'll want to dilute it with water. A gallon goes a long way. It smells nice, too, and is water-based & environmentally safe--unlike muriatic acid or most solvents.

CRC Hydro Force 14416 degreaser. Look for the part number or the words "Hydro Force Industrial" since they make different stuff in similarly-labeled bottles. It's available in quarts, too. I think that number is 14415. The "All Purpose" stuff isn't nearly as effective--that's more of a household cleaner.
