What to do...

if your accountant tells you on the last filing day, that you owe a LARGE sum to the good ol' goverment?
No warning, no advice on spending. Zip. Zero. Nadda.
This accountant is the same outfit that does the week to week bookkeeping for the business.
The last couple days, we've been going over things, and have found what I consider many fuck-ups in the accounting dept. One of my buddies who used the same accountant tells me last year they did the same to him, only for a much larger amount.
Do I start screaming, get a gun, or contact the CGA Association and look into filing a complaint?

Truthfully, I don't know enough about that end of the business, I'm just a bodyman.
Anybody have any serious suggestions (here? HAH!) on what my next step should be?

Well, I don't know what the CGA Association is, but were I in your position I'd certainly look into filing a complaint with some kind of regulatory body. It sounds like old-fashioned laziness to me, as they certainly had all your records from last year and should have been able to at least fire a shot across your bow, letting you know you were going to be taking a financial hit come tax time.

However, I think the best thing you can do is simply finish out any outstanding business with this firm, then find another. If they ask why you're leaving tell them you've found a firm that understands half of "financial responsibility" responsibility, which is something you couldn't count on them to be.

If you do switch firms, pay a little extra to have the new crew do some back checking into the old firm's work... it might save you an audit, fines, etc. if the old work was shoddy.

Find a new cga get started with them and have them start going back over your books that were previously undone and file a complaint in that order. :( Best of luck.

I'd get stinky drunk..and I don't even drink. (leave it alone jass)

Seriously fucked up there resto, sorry to hear of it. Certainly a new accountant is in order. Trouble is it's getting harder to count on good help these days. :(

I guess the part that's hardest to understand is I didn't make any money last year. I'm the guy who owns the rusty and primered covered '82 Volvo with the expired plates. :(
If my wife didn't have a good job, I'd fucking starve.

I'm meeting with the new guys next week. Supposedly, they went thru my friend's past returns and found quite a few errors and omissions. 'Course, he told me this after the fact.

Have the new guy file for an extension, then after they check everything over, (and hopefully save a bundle), then you go back to the first ones and tell them that you don't expect your customers to pay for shoddy work, therefore you don't believe in paying anyone else for shoddy work.

;)

Hire me. :)

White Male college educated redneck with 35 years experience of delivering good news and bad news. No surprises, thats the ultimate sin for an accountant.

Plus I can hold a trouble light.

Well after spending most of Saturday and today going over the last year's invoices, I can safely say I'm pissed.
It's no wonder they fucked it up, their filing systems sucks. Utility bills in with towing company statements, invoices from '06 mixed in with '07, cheque stubs and deposits not reconciled with the bank statements.... on and on and on.
$4550 spent on bookkeeping services last year. I should have just thrown the money into the wind and watch it float away.
If I worked for my clients the way these ditzes worked for me, I'd have been put out of business long ago.
We found almost 14k they had pegged as personal income, where it should have been used as expenditures. And I'm not a fricking' accountant. I can't wait to see what the new guys find.:helpme:
This has got me pretty fucking stressed, I tell ya.

with any luck the new guy will set you straight..by the sounds of what you found they didnt f-up they were just morons

Have the new guys do a forensic audit and charge all the f***ups back to the old accountants and sue the bejeesus out of them for missmanagement and see if you can get their license pulled.
