Since I'll be going to Japan, I had an idea of Japanese oriantated Christmas gifts for my family. And because I'm more often than not, short on cash, it seems the things you make have the most meaning and value. So, since I'm learning Japanese along with the kickass looking kanji, I got the idea after eating at a local Japanese resturant when I observed the wall scrolls.

I am thinking of doing one or two for my parents and giving it to them before I head off to Japan (because I don't know if I'll get back before or after Christmas) as well as one for my brother and the "adopted" son, his friend and roommate we all have come to see as family.

So, today I went to the local hobby store (Hobby Lobby to be exact) and found some Japanese calligraphy brushes (thats what I need, and I can't justify spending $12.99 for the same damn brush when I can get it for $1.99) as well as some calligraphy ink and cleaner. The paper I'll be using is simular to regular printer paper, so since its the weekend, no ones watching the printer stock in the computer lab, so I got practice paper and plenty of it.

After getting back, I decided to give it a try. I started with something real simple, writing "Japan" in Kanji. It was lighter than it should, but not bad for a white boy :D. After a few more kanji, I realized I'm actully good at this  , so its a go for my parents gift. I still need more practice, but I think I'm doing good for an amature. Since this is an actuall art-form in Japan, I feel pretty good about myself and perhaps I might find it to be a small business venture as well.

I'll load up the pictures later today, they are currently drying in my dorm room...thank God I have no roommate. :D

Here they are!

:bwuhaha: Yeah, the first one is "Japan" in kanji. Thats the first one I did when I broke out the brush, so its not to bad for never doing this. The second one is the one for my parents, its my last name on the left and on the right (you read them going down) is fish farm, since my dad runs a yellow perch farm.
