whats worth more: original paint or repainted?

i know a guy who just picked up a 68 charger that is in pretty nice original shape. single tear on the drivers seat cover type thing. the original white paint is fried but the body is in great shape and its rust free. in my own mind its worth more to a serious buyer because he can see the condition of the body as compared to a repaint. its a 383 with auto/console, air, etc. and i have not seen it in person but i think its an r/t. what do you guys think? original fried paint or repaint in original white?

Simple in my mind. Take a high quality video of it in its present state, then at each step of the new paintjob. :) Best of both worlds! :)

thats a good idea. go over everything with a digicam and then they dont have to guess about whats under that shiny paint. [smilie=e:

Toasted original paint will really detract from its' value. Every one who looks at it will over-price the cost to refinish and try to knock the price down that much.
The video thing sounds like a great idea.

unless it's a hemi or one of none survivor that can be used by thousands as a reference, the fried paint is a liability because it will be looked at as a project car by most.

But documentation of the repaint is essential. Especially with white or yellow cars, which are known as "bondo colors" for their ability to hide less than perfect bodywork.

If it is a collector car then originality, up to a point, is better than redone. But this does not sound like a collector car. Paint it.

A can can be restored a thousand times. It is original once. There are "Survivor Tents" and areas at all the large car shows. There aren't so many "Repaint" tents around. Well except for those million dollar plus paperweights.
