I've been thinking about a new cam for the 383, it sounds like a stock cam which was under 400 lift. I was looking at Summit and they have their brand cam which sounds decent. Does it sound too big?:wtf:

Doesnt sound very hot to me- a stock 440 cam has around 480 or so lift, look up your stocker once I bet its more than that one.

I would yank those closed chambers before I dumped a new bump stick in it, THEN you can get it to run.

Why would I dump the closed chambered heads? Closed chamber is better for quench except the pistons sit too far in the hole.[smilie=p:
Just a smaller exhaust valve 1.60 instead of 1.74 and I'd lose compression by increasing the area by 6cc's.:hmmm: I don't want to overhaul it just give it some more ummff!

Leave the heads on Russ, just install new springs and run it. Although those small valve heads are not the ultimate performance item it will still run pretty strong. That summit cam should work well for a street cruiser IMHO.

I had a small valve 383 in the RR once upon a time and with the stock 2Bbl cam and only a carb, intake and ignition upgrade it would run a 14 second 1/4 with 3.23 gears and 28" tall tires..

Maybe look for a set of 915's.

Use that cam and if you want to pull heads put larger valves in your heads maybe hardend seats, wil need new springs with cam... Nice mild motor

here we go again

I agree that you lose compression by switching to open chambers but with todays crappy overpriced fuel you need to. THEN use a RV grind with staggered duration to compensate for the lower ratio and you will have increased low end and 20 plus MPG so you might even be able to afford to drive the thing.

i also saw those cams and that one looked smallish to me so i got the other BB cam. i think its 282/292 465/488. i still have not installed it yet but i took it out and looked at it and it looked like a decent piece for pretty cheap. wish i had it installed so i could give you an evaluation on it. btw, for 20 more bones you can get new lifters with it.

Actually that kit does come with the lifters and it's only $89.95:dance: I'll be doing it over winter anyhow, I'll have the 400 motor to consider too.:hmmm:

That cam will work fine for a mild street cruiser. I dont get the impression you plan to race the car much so its not like you are looking to pickup 100 hp. It wont be a real lumpy idle but it will give a small lope and it will work ok in a mild mostly stock 383. I ran the MP .484-284 advertised cam in my old 383 and I loved that cam. The price is right and I am sure it will work fine for what you want for now. Ron
