I'm not an experienced mechanic, but I could make a fine truck apprentice. :D

Why does opportunity have to arise out of my reach? Argh!

LOL! Outta YOUR reach? It's a hell of a swim from here.

I just happened to be thinking about what I want to do when I get out of the Navy before I saw this post. I am thinking of going to either UTI, Hot Rod University, Wyotech or something along those lines. From there... [smilie=e: I don't get out of the Navy until late 2009 and I'm here in PR until the end of 2006. If I can get stationed near one of those schools for my last duty station that will help the transition a lot. I'd like to either start/buy some kind of custom fabrication / hot rod shop or a motorcycle dealership. Still trying to decide.

My mom has pics of me at about 4 yrs old wandering around dads old cabover with a grease gun, I guess that gives me 40 yrs plus experience. Did a 4 yr hitch in the army as a wheel vehicle mechanic and have rebuilt numerous log trucks and end dumps. I know-Im overqualified. [smilie=e:

Was recognized as one of the top 10 automotive Students in BC... back in 1997 [smilie=e:

Would relocate for a full-time gig. Nothing keeping me here, 'cept fear of gettin' pulled over by the Sammich man [smilie=2:

DANG! It sounds great. I wish I knew something about car parts.

I can't even go in for a visit without paying a $200 application fee, which then means they'll just consider giving me permission.

Y'all aren't lenient about folks with records... and in my case, Canada considers me a felon though I've got no felony convictions. If it's a felony there, but a misdemeanor in the US, they consider it a felony anyhow.

A trucker friend of mine ran into it a couple years back... he gave false personal information to a police officer about 10 years prior to it. Here, that's a minor misdemeanor; in Canada it's apparently a felony. So, when he gets a load Sault Ste Marie MI that's going to upstate New York, he can't cut across... he gets paid the miles for cutting across Canada, but has to drive all the way around Lakes Huron, Erie, and Ontario. Of course, he could gamble on paying the $200 fee, but apparently the odds are about 50/50 at best, and he doesn't have that kind of money to spare on a gamble. Besides, those loads are just common enough to be an annoyance.

But if you look at the map, it's obvious he takes a monetary ass-kicking on such trips:

I don't think they are lienient,I had 3 buddy's coming up in January,2 had DUI's and one had a pot possession charge from '71era,all considered misdemeanors in the USA,in those day's,,canada wouldn't budge on letting them in,,even my wife was hassled,in '88 while applying for a work visa, she had a record pop up,from Mississippi, with a pot possession charge in high school in '69,.......I had to fight them hard to get her entry,...I ran back and forth from our home in florida and canada for many years, plus had work visas in the US and many other countries and I had an assaulting a cop charge, from '74 and never had a problem, once in awhile US customs would ask me "what happened there?",and I'd tell them and that charges were dropped, cause I proved in court that he wrongfully arrested me, and sucker punched me,and broke my nose(in return,I broke his nose and jaw in 3 places, and caved in a few of his ribs) I since got a pardon for that, and not 'til 2004,but it wasn't even really a pardon,as I was never convicted, fuggin' Canada violates people's right's daily, hoarding info that isn't allowed on your record,,If you get charged with something, and you beat it in court, then it isn't a criminal record,,but these idiot's think so,stick it on your record, and then you gotta' fight to have it removed, same with misdemeanor's, Ummmmm.....what was the topic again?..lol..sorry,rant over!!

and yes Doc,all the trucker's coming east out of the UP and western canada, cut thru Ontario to save big miles, depending on your buddy's charge,he could likely get a travel for employment permit,or a trucker's release,,but likely cost that $200,I had mine removed by the RCMP,for free in about 2 hours of requesting it by fax,the provincial cops wouldn't remove it,cause the "tough guy" I spanked was one of their's....,

Ah! Sorry. My experience with coming back into Canada from the U.S. is so ridiculously laughable, it's embarassing.

The only time I was ever pulled over to go into the office was with the Charger, and really, that was just to pay the duty and taxes.

When the dollar was good, we used to go shopping in Niagara Falls, NY all the time. Never ever was I pulled over and checked.

Coming back from vacation:

from Maine at about 3 in the morning:
Customs: Citizenship
Me: Canadian
Customs: How long away
Me: 5 days
Customs: Where ya been
me: Maine
Customs: How much ya bringin back
Me: about $700 all together.
Customs: and tobacco or alcohol?
Me: Yes. My wife bought a carton of cig....
Customs: Okay. Go ahead.
Me: thanks. VRooooommmmm

From Disney at about the same time:
Citizenship
Canadian
Where ya been?
Disney World.
Go ahead.

Both times: didn't even ask for ID.

Coming back from Boston with the fender I picked up in Jersey:
I had the fender sticking through the back seat from the trunk - covered in a blue tarp - in plain sight.
Citizenship
Canadian
How long away?
6 days
How much you bringing back?
$300
Customs leans out booth and looks right at blue tarp.
K, go ahead.
VroooOOOOmmmmm...

THAT's why I say we're pretty lenient.

Sorry for the long post, but I though you'd find the stories amusing if not downright funny. Certainly, they are awe inspiring - but not necessarily in a good sense.

Stayed in the States for 6 months a few years back. Came back no problem, then tried to go back into the States a week or two later.

The Americans sent me into the office and asked how long I was in last time etc... so I was honest, 6 months... answered some other questions.

DENIED access on account of FREELOADING in the US. :D

They gave me some silly white paper which I had to show the Canadian Border guard at the booth.

Border guard - What's wrong?

Me - Got turned back

Border guard - huh? what for?

Me - They said I was "Freeloading in the States", even though I was working.

Border guard - *laughs* That's messed up. Who the hell would wanna freeload in their Country?

[smilie=e:

yes, they were likely worried about the current "freeloader" situation, and worried about you, taking anything away from them. i.e. a welfare check, bowl of soup in a hostel,a nice comfy park bench,or maybe even some free state medical services. back in the late 60's early 70's they wanted anybody capable of carrying a weapon in SE asia, to come on down,,which is fine, but why the change of heart?.....[smilie=e:
