Wow, my damper must have slipped quite a bit![smilie=2: I did it the old farts way and used a vacuum gauge and advanced the timing until it didn't rise anymore then backed off 1". According to the marks it's set about 30 degrees advanced!:D
It's running like a 383 should! I do have a slight ping under full throttle so I may back it off a hair. I still want to change the metering springs in the Edelbrock carb, they are 4" vacuum from the factory, only for this carb., the rest are 5". This engine definately sounds like it has the 2bbl cam in it too so I want to step it up a couple inches so it get's a richer acceleration, might help the pinging too.:xl:
Now I'm wondering if I should put a new damper on it?:hmmm: Anybody using those powerforce ones? It's not a race engine so I don't need an sfi approved one.:toot:

I quit using timing lights years ago. The factory settings are fine as long as none of the parts are worn and as original. As soon as something is changed or worn, it wants different timing.

Now, let's get that carb working right.

Anybody using a powerforce damper? I see 440source sells em.
I just don't want the damper to come apart and tear up the original radiator.[smilie=k:

I got one from them. It's the Stainless SFI approved billet one. Looks sweet in person. It almost feels too light for a damper. I didn't get it installed while I was in PA so I don't have any other useful input than that.

I think I'll get the non sfi one and try it. I'll call my machine shop and see if he's had any negative results from any.;)

Im with 68 on this one, I have a dialback light on an old scope and a regular hand held and they dont get used much. If its not wobbling and you dont feel any undue vibes at higher revs, its probably not going to grenade any time soon. When you switch out the 290 horse cam you can freshen it at that time. Thats a closed chamber yr also so keep that in mnind on cam selection.:)

Well I won't do anything with that motor other than tune it as it's the original, I'm looking at a 400 to build for it. I gotta sell my pristine 340 block though to make room.:(

Naw, didn't get the Dart. Anything with that great of a body deserves a garage, something I couldn't provide! :doubt:

Well I got rid of the pinging with the stiffer carb springs but not much in the way of performance. :doubt: I have another damper coming so I know where I'm at with the timing.
I think I'm going to go for the factory look under the hood so I may even go back to the 2bbl [smilie=2: !! But maybe not, just shave the edelbrock down on the aluminum manifold.[smilie=i: I'll probably get better gas mileage on just the primaries of the 4bbl than I would with the 2bbl.:hmmm:

Hey XL, I know where you can get a 4bbl intake fer ceap! Just throw a coupla extra head gaskets in dere an yer good to go...:toot:

PM me for a list of available parts and casting #'s...

ya, what he said.

Naw XL, he aint got no intake but he's got a connecting rod and some main cap nuts...

You did catch that remark about the "extra head gaskets needed" right XL. The one at Don's is for a 440 not a 383, remember?

I know. I have a grinder, and a welder, and we can do it! YES, we can!!!
