Once again, the Fed is trying to ruin or at least damage the old-car hobby. Pelosi and her band idiots are trying to pass a "Cash for Clunkers" bill with an economic stimulus package under the false guise of improving air quality and increasing new-car sales, as well as "saving gas".

What it really does is lower the availability of cars for projects or to low-income drivers who can't afford a recent used car, much less a new one (this is a real problem here in the U.P. and I'm sure we're not exclusive). Besides, the vast majority of their "clunkers" are 2nd- or 3rd-use vehicles or collector cars, so it's not like they're on the 50-mile commute every day.

They're trying to get this passed for Obama to sign as soon as it takes office.

Do something about it. Do it NOW. I did. Click this link, read it, and tell Pelosi what you think of this plan.

Federal and Provincial goverments here are looking at the same thing.

So far, it's just in the talking stages, but both goverments have a history of forcing their wills upon everyone, regardless of the wishes of the majority.

I believe it is heavily lobbied for by the auto manufacturers, labour unions and the insurance industry.
It's a no-win situation for anyone in the old car "hobby" (so called) and for folks like me who can't afford and don't want any of the new stuff.
Gas savings? That's friggin' laughable. My 89 Corolla used to get close to 38 mpg average. My Dad's 06 Focus gets 32 mpg, and it's a pile of dung.

If this kind of law comes into effect, it'll be just another example of how "we, the people" are being controlled. Slowly, but surely, our abilities to control our own lives are being taken away from us.
American or Canadian, it's happening now.

15 states already have these laws! What they do is let the power companies buy pollution credits. That means every time they bought a car they didn't have to reduce there pollution.
What really happens is people sell them junk cars that don't even run so it does no good. But that started before our cars had value, and we lost 70% of our parts cars in the deal.

This has nothing to do with pollution credits or corporations, patrick--this means any joe off the street gets a fat check from you and me (via the Fed) for crushing an old car. That's far more alarming to me.

Actually, the emerging details of this plan is that you'd get a credit toward buying a new car - not just a a check.

I think based on that, it will fail - unless you can stack up the credits for turning in multiple cars and get a new car for free.

Sure , some will turn in some clunkers - but the idea of a mass crushing for cash is out the window if this part of the plan stays in effect.
