Stuck pistons...

Dr.Jass

Pastor of Muppets
...anyone got a sure-fire way of removing them? I have a few blocks here with pistons rusted in place in the cylinders, and I'd like to at least try to salvage them. PB Blaster has had no effect--I left it in there for weeks--so I'm not inclined to believe any other penetrating oil will either.

I've currently got one of my 340 blocks--the worst of the bunch--soaking in Marvel Mystery Oil, which I'm told is the absolute last word in removing stuck pistons. Anyone had any success with this, or any other method? I'm to the point where I'm going to try and demolish the pistons so they can be taken out in pieces, if nothing else. I'd at least like to try and save my 340 blocks; the 360 I'm not so worried aboot.

Ideas?

do you have heads for it, maybe try to use an air compresser and shot air down the spark plug hole. Like a reverse compression test.

try to heat up the block and keep the pistons cool

are the rods on, can you try to twist, or rotate the piston just alittle to break the rust.

i try to think of more

These babies are stuck--blasting air down them isn't going to do it. The block--with five pistons & rods still in it--could easily be hung from the ceiling by one connecting rod and that piston wouldn't move.

I'm trying to avoid doing anything that will overstress the block and possibly crack it, so I'm not beating on the pistons or twisting the rods. Heat only accelerates corrosion anyhow, and aluminum picks up heat and expands faster than iron, so I'm thinking chemical methods are the only option short of piston demolition (via drill, hammer and chisel).

Doc the best I've done is a 48 hour soak in mystery oil and then a 2x4 on the domes with assistance of a 5 pound mall. and yes a rebore is a necessity. [smilie=e:

I have heard that oil of wintergreen will eat rust. Supposedly you get it at a pharmacy, but when I tried to find some they looked at me like I had 3 heads.

Well if air will not do it try grease. Get a plate you can put over the block, so it covers the cylinder, drill a hole in the center and put a grease zerk in it. 1st fill the cylinder up with grease, bolt the plate down over the cylinder and start pumping grease in. You should use a gasket as well.

a recirculating shower of www.safestrustremover.com might do it..

Might take a while if the fluid has to eat it's way down the sides.
But if it can flow in and around the sides a little bit, it might just work.

The nice thing is that it won't eat the metal.

I've heard a few cans of Coke down the bores might work. I guess the high acidity is supposed to eat the rust. I've never tried it though, but hey a 12-pack is what, $5.00? I guess it can't hurt.

I have used the piece at a time removal to doc, I used my air chisel with a punch installed to start in the middle and work my way to the walls in a circle. I'm to impatient to wait a couple days / weeks for some oil to work.

I've used Diesel fuel down the cylinders on stuck pistons in tractor engines before, and it loosened em up enough to get em out.
