Yup. They used to just look like guests with only an IP address.
I added in some stuff so we can know who's doing what..

Those a good spiders, if there is such a thing.

I also added some stuff to slow down the spiders so they don't hammer our site at 15 pages per second. If they behave as they should, they'll get a page every 2 minutes.

Short answer: They crawl through websites from page to page and index all of the information in their search engine databases. It's how they keep their search results up to date.

both types of spiders are good with few exceptions.

I like the real ones because I would rather have a bird-eating spider living in my house than even one small roach (the insect kind...the other kind is welcome anytime!)

And beyond the black widow, brown recluse, and some stupid banana spider we don't ever have to worry about, no spider is dangerous or particularly agressive...

and the internet spiders are cool because they keep the web linked to the site via search engines...
