What are the hot tips for shipping a small box to Winnipeg?

I'm an international shipping virgin, please help to make my first experience my best.

Thanks,

Bob

What service are you going to use?, UPS,USPS?. Check the gift box on the customs form to try to keep the taxing A-Holes on the other side from going nuts on the recipient.
I sent 6pkrunner a die cast engine ($24.99) and the morons tried to tell him it was a $95.00 dollar diecast!.

USPS is the only way I ship to Canada. UPS tacks on an unbelievably high fee![smilie=2:

Whatever you do, don't send it UPS - they charge a bogus "brokerage" fee on everything. If it is small enough, the post office is the best bet.

As Gio says, the "gift" thing is good, or if it's something you have sold, it's always best to include a bill of sale in the package for the Gov't goons to base taxes on. Otherwise, as he said, they will estimate a value and charge the recipient taxes based on that.

Yes USPS is best.
Canadapost MIGHT charge $5 for processing the customs paperwork, but usually don't bother for gifts and low $ value items.
UPS charges $25 for doing the same paperwork.

Whats needed if your bringing the stuff over? I'll be bringing some parts up for XL. What kind of problems will I have?

No problems at all.

While your at it, make sure you hide some drugs and automatic weapons in the parts.

I'm thinking they might be interested in seeing some kind of proof of ownership, unless it's REAL crusty old stuff. I am dead sure they will want to know who the stuff is going to, and how much it cost him, so they can charge goods-and -services taxes on it.

The person you are shipping to.

But - in the case of UPS, it's a scam. There is no reason for them to charge the fees to a private citizen, and most companies importing goods use a broker anyways.

UPS sucks.

OK, so send it usps, mark it as a gift, hope it actually gets there. Thanks everybody

Also thow an envelope in the package with a "letter" in it. Shipping, for some reason, is slightly less if the package also contains a letter. Be sure to tell the counterperson that it contains a letter.;)

That sounds an awful lot like a setup for a joke on me - but I'll try it anyway. :)

Well it's a lot more expensive to ship cross-border, and there's no tracking numbers either, but it's on the way.

The counterguy said he'd never heard of the "it's got a letter in it" discount, but I tried anyway.

Even though I mentioned that I'd been paid for the part I was shipping (oops), he didn't complain that I'd marked "GIFT" on the customs form.

Never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never use UPS. Destroy what you were going to ship and burn yourself slowly before using UPS. Admit to being a Taliban Osama Jester lover before using UPS.
The USPS is perfect. Except for the one or two instances I had - The scale hemi Gio sent was one, the rest of the time they are great.
But for even typing UPS, I'm going to have to seer the flesh from my fingers.

UPS are the biggest A-holes in the delivery world. I bought a part from New Jersey, a $25 part, UPS charged me $40 from the boarder to my house just north of Toronto. The shipping was supposed to have been pasi, however they only calculate the price to the boarder.
I got door panels all the way from California via the Postal Service. It took about 10 days, but it cost less than 15.00 to ship it here to my house.
Like 6pak says: never, never use UPS:D

UPS always demands 30-60% over what you have already paid for shipping. I won a motorcycle part on eGouge and the seller and I discussed shipping and not to use UPS. Well a knock on the door and there's the UPS Gestappo wanting $37.45 on a $14.99 part. Refused it. Back it goes to buddy who then sends it USPS.

I will gladly do without anything and hit myself in the head with a mace before even thinking of shipping anything with those fargin' icehole bastages.

I totally agree on the UP(your)S. Even the UPS guy will tell yah not to ship it through them.
I use USPS or Fed EX. I like FED EX.

I live in Winnipeg you can just ship it to me. The gift thing doesn't work. If for what ever reason they open it and don't see a card or wrapping paper they charge full price for it. Best way to do it is declare it as (A) a used good (B) have the declared value under $20 or (C) warranty replacement. I usually ask for option C. No questions asked. OH YA and for you UPS complainers, I paid the fees for a long time till I got a disgruntled delivery guy who told me to refuse the package and tell them that you'll clear customs your self. YOu save a whole lot of money if you don't mind the 10 minute wait. What you have to do is have UPS fax you the clearance document which you take down to the local customs branch (not the airport but an actual customs place) walk in with the form. Tell them you have car parts or whatever you would like to clear. Stand around for 5 minutes while they fill in the paper work, then pay the taxes on the declared value. Then you either leave the paper work with customs and UPS will redeliver or you take the paper work to the UPS depot and pick your stuff up and go on your merry little way. Last time I had to do this UPS wanted $68.90 I only paid $6.14 at customs. Some times no matter what you say the shipper still goes through UPS even though they told you they would go USPS
