Shipping a transmission via FedEx

mopar_man

Good time party boy
Has anyone done it? Does it need to be crated or will they take it bare? I've found one online but the seller wants no part in shipping it so it has to be picked up as it is.

Oh, boy... you might want to talk to 71ChargerRT about FourEx and fed-speed transmissions. :dgt:

I don't know if they'll ship it bare or not, but I can virtually guarantee you it will have to be completely drained.

That bad, huh? So, does anybody live near Springfield, Mass. to put it on the bus for me? :doubt:

His was boxed and they broke the hell out of it. Search the forums a little bit and you should find it. It wasn't that long ago.

I've made some pretty-impressive wooden shipping crates over the years, and used to have designs of them. Four-speeds, crankshafts, anything that really should be supported correctly in shipping. When I sold something, I made the buyer pay a $75 refundable crating fee they'd get back once the crate was shipped back to me. I would remind them about it after I knew they got the item, and every single time they opted to keep the crate. I wish they wouldn't have. I made a nice one for the axles that ended up in Nodda's Demon, and friggin' Moser Engineering kept it!

B&M shipped my automatic full of fluid.

Needless to say, it got here upside down and drenched in fluid. Front pump seal has leaked since day one too.

Cant remember who the shipping company was, but they made a mess of a very heavy duty shipping crate.

New fluid and a proper shipping crate are a little different situation than bare with 40-year-old gear oil in it, though. The front pump seal leaking is not surprising; overall I've not heard much good about B&M over the past 20 years, particularly their transmissions & torque converters. I would assume yours has been serving you well for a while now, though, so other than the leak I won't condemn it. Did they ship it with the converter installed? That's a big no-no.

I asked Bill about it and he said they broke case despite being boxed with Styrofoam. Crating is out of the question. The seller of this particular one won't even take it the 25 miles to the nearest bus stop. The only reason I'm going after this one in particular is that is relatively cheap and includes the transmission, bell, flywheel, fork and shifter mount.

Keep looking for someone to help you with it. I bought a visor for my 48 Desoto and the seller wanted $300 to ship the thing!! I told him to pound sand. I eventually found a couple guys over on the HAMB who lived local to the guy. They got it for me, packaged it up and shipped it to me for $50!!

I like to use old pallets to make shipping crates. You can get them for nothing...and they have a lot of good pieces to work with. ;)

Nope bought the converter separately.

Yeah other than the pump seal the trans has been spectacular. 3 years now.

I've not had the time/energy to drop the thing and fix it.

It's been so long since I've been on here, I don't know if anyone lives over near Springfield. I put an ad on uship with one clown giving me a quote of over $1700 to ship it. :doubt:

Jeez, I think the 340 Brothers or RustyCuda are probably the closest ones. $1,700? It's going to cost me less to go to Alabama to pick up my Challenger, for God's sake!

That's what you think!!! :D

A person could fly down and pay the overweight fee on luggage and still be into it for less.

I put out a feeler on an e-body forum I belong but I can't see getting any help there since I'm new on it. I won't give up yet!

Cost of shipping is only going to get worse as fuel prices climb, and all the enviro/safety regulations push the cost of highway tractors to new extremes.
