The original Hemi engineshad superior performance for any given displacement, when compared with theirAmerican counterparts, butthe large heads provided to be quite heavy, a disadvantage both in handling and in repairs. One solution would be using aluminum heads, and in 1947, Chrysler apparently was investigating that solution.
The son of a Chrysler engineer has provided blueprints for an aluminum head Hemi V8 engine. The actual Hemi engine was made starting in 1950,for 1951 Chrysler cars. It spread to every brand the company owned, other than Plymouth, whose V8 would eventually use cheaper wedge heads. The company shifted away from Hemi heads due to their cost; competitors were simply using larger and larger displacements. (...) →
