It's kind of a gray area, really, but I agree with you... rates up there with rebodies.
It is illegal, but they're trying to stop theft with those laws. While I think it's immoral to do to your show car for nothing more than a trophy, it's still illegal. But, I doubt a federal fraud prosecutor would take the case... that would be like trying to win a lawsuit for buying a car you bought online and never had checked out or even saw in person. It happens... hell, a while back Stretch and I checked out a '64 4-speed Maxie Dodge that had the correct "426" and "MP" number stampings. Getting under the car, we saw the block was actually a 440. The owner never even knew it--he bought the car as legit but was too, uh, girthy to get under the car and look at the casting numbers.
