I was at a local wrecking yard this past weekend looking for a dana 60 for a friend.
I found one and the axle was stamped with dana. However the case had 248 stamped on the housing which stopped me to dig a bit deeper. I grabbed the dana part number of 6684 -1 the sticker also says manufactured in 2006 and model as 60s
Then I counted the cover bolts and there were 12

I ran the numbers on the dana site and says it's from a Chevy
I just didn't know they now have 12 bolt covers. Is this actually a 60? Are the gears interchangeable from the old 60's?
Did bearings change sizes?
Who has all these answers?.
I was going to cut it down and weld on chrysler car ends but wanted these answers. I will probably continue looking for another axle but it has me wondering.

If it's out of a 2006 it's an AAM axle, not a Dana. Both GM & Chrysler stopped using Dana axles after 2002, if memory serves.

If you're looking to convert a truck axle, try and find an earlier 60. I'm not sure when it happened, but somewhere along the line ('90s) it picked up a crush sleeve, and that's when the problems started. Also realize a pinion snubber can't be used on a truck housing, since it won't have the mounting bosses. May or may not be an issue, but it's worth keeping in mind. Also keep in mind that the Dana 70 uses the same cover as the 60.

If it is an aam axle. How come it has dana stampings on the cover? Also on the shock mounts. The cover also had a bunch of numbers on it. I should of snapped a photo of it.
