"Rare" Gas cap?!?!?!

I was expecting to see a rag stuffed in the quarter panel fill tube when I read the title of this thread.:D It's in nice shap for sure. But that does seam high. Even if it is NOS.

Yeah, well Frank Mitchell's prices are always high... but at least he's a jerk.

It's worth exactly what someone will pay for it, and I don't see it bringing anywhere near that number.

How many '68 Super Stock Hemi Barracudas do you suppose were built with a locking fuel cap? I would bet not a single one.

its a stock 67/68 fish cap..big deal ive got a bunch of em....in 69 they put "fuel" in the center of the cap and i belive shared atleast the cap with the chargers

however it is one of few "locking" filler tube one ive seen...but without the locking fill tube and the lock for the locking fuel tube its worthless...

another look at it tells me my hunches for convgerting a non locker to a locker would be easy

The one on my friend's 1969 Barracuda was the same filler neck, just a really-small, hard-to remove fuel cap with a lock in it. :wtf:

Does it come with the spring and gasket for that price? I don't see them in the picture. Or did '68 charger locking caps not have the spring and gasket?

No, there was no gasket or spring on the flip-top part with a factory locking cap. The gasket and lock were in the cap itself, which goes on the filler neck like a normal fuel cap. The rubber you see on the auction piece is to keep the locking cap from vibrating and making noise. The part is 100% complete and correct as shown, but you still need the cap to fit beneath it. In this case, the flip-top part is just a cover for the actual gas cap.

Yeah, exactly. It looks cool but it's just one more thing you've got to do to put fuel in the car!

Nuts.

You can get the locking gas caps repopped now.
Or you could for a while, anyway.

I wanna say Rick K from Layson's set up a run of them and was going to do it again... maybe.

One came with my 69 and I actually got it work with just a little WD40 to get things moving again.

if you have it working slean it out with brake clean and then get some graphite POWDER into it..youll likely have to work the brake clean into it while useing the key on it..ive done this with a good handfull of locks and short of a full dissasembly brake clean works wonders

Not for the past couple of years, though. Prices have been seriously down, at least the last time I saw. I'm seeing more-impressive numbers from less-impressive cars. I don't think there's a Chrysler '67-'68 model anything out there that warrants a $1300 fuel door! As I said, I doubt any Super Stock Barracudas had locking fuel caps. It's not like they were left in parking lots while the owner was in Walgreen's. :D

Every dollar was spent on the go-fast equipment. Why waste money on the useless glitter.

We've all heard of the "rubber floormats, radio delete, " etc.

Yeah Frank tries to sell his stuff at a premium. I currently came across some NOS front turn signal bezels for my 48 Desoto, guy was asking $40 a pop...not a bad deal. Came across Frank selling the same parts for $375 each!!
