Rare car, or something nobody wanted?

The paint fumes have cleared so I'm
I had a gentleman in today setting up an estimate for his son's 71 Judge hardtop.
A two owner car, it came with (and still has) a 455 Poncho engine, vinyl top, bench seat and three-on-the-tree-column-shift! Also has a rear defroster grid in the rear window.

The car supposedly still has it's original paint and stripes.

This has got to be the weirdest set-up I've ever heard of in a GM.

I've seen Goats with 3 on-the-floor but never on the tree.:hmmm:

-----YES so have i - in the barn and saw chickens in the tree....iv,e also seen sheep on a Rampage.and saw a JUDGE in a courtroom. so yes RESTO the JUDGE could be different:huh:

By three on the tree, you mean what that normally means? A 3 speed manual? If so, that IS weird as hell. I can picture what driving it would be like as you shift through the gears at glacial speed:

1st gear: Screeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeech!!!

(pause.................make some coffee......)

2nd gear: Screeech!

(pause.........other guy gets out of his car at the end of the race)

3rd gear: Chirp! (we're really rollin now!)

Even worse would be when the linkage jams 'tween 2nd and 3rd.

He's supposed to get back to sometime next week - I'd really like to see it for myself.

Maybe he ordered it that way cause he wanted to snuggle with his honey while cruising and didn't want a slush box.

Yeah, definitely weird.

Have been told by a roadrunner owner that was why he liked the bench seat, but a 3 speed on the column that is just STRANGE.

For the youngers here abouts 3 speed on the column was a early paddle shifter setup that was SLOW to shift unless you had a early mopar. To go from first to 2nd clutch then rotate about 1/2 way to reverse push forward hoping it clears the other gear tabs then rotate 30 more deg up. For a mopar you had to find the gate and pull back to get into first but then it was just up and down to shift one of the ways out cars were better....

:bwuhaha:

Hopefully you can get to see it and pop off a few pictures (if they'll let you). Sounds very interesting anyway.

According to some of the Brand X posters I've sent to guys the 1970 Judge could be had with the three on the tree much like the standard manual transmission for the 1970 hi po Mopars was the 3-speed. To skirt under the ever-increasing insurance watchdog eye and also to keep costs down. Not a lot left that way but there weren't super scarce. But to this day when someone comes across one they think its a backyard replacement for the "had to be stock" 4-speed.

I saw a RARE car today... [smilie=2:

A RUNNING, DRIVING, TAGGED, & INSPECTED YUGO...:bwuhaha: :bwuhaha: :bwuhaha:

ive never driven a 3sp with the shifter on the column... but the car was built before i was a gleam in my daddys eye.....

i did have a 3sp manual in my old jeep though.... thing was a beast.... could never get the linkages adjusted after we put the new clutch in though....

Bah. You guys don't know what you are talking about. Rusty (the 49 Coronet) has a three in the tree, and I can smoke through those gears so fast it would make your head spin. I can prove it too! any one of you can just run right along next to me and watch......

I worked on an early 80's F150 with a 300 an' a tree on da tree, I had just put a new clutch in it and tried to shift normal like...:vroom:

ended up puttin another new clutch in it the next day:doh:
