R.I.P. Virgil

68R/T

I got drunk and swallowed my teeth, now
back in '02 while in high school, as an assignment, Jr. had to interview someone that had served during WW II. I told him to go next door and interview Virgil, because I had known that he had been decorated after the war.

Well, the teachers had been so impressed with his work that they posted it on-line; http://www.jefferson.k12.wi.us/jms/LibraryHomePage/WartimeRemembrances/apetty/petty.html

Virg was a humble guy and would say, "I just did what everyone else would"
Not only were we neighbors for over 30 years, but until his retirement, we worked at the same factory. And yes, he was a distant cousin of Richard Petty.

Another small town "hero" was buried today....................

..............but not forgotten.

I have a 93 year old neighbour, George....great man and still very active and lives alone with his wife of 70+ years. He was in WW II as well but he doesn't really like to talk about it. I chat with George as much as possible since I lost my grandfather while I was in my Tweens and was still too young to appreciate him and his years of wisdom.

I really have a hard time seeing all these stores gearing up for Christmas BEFORE Remebrance/Veterans day...I feel like the commercialization of Christmas is more important to these stores and the majority of the consumers out there then what these men and women did and sacrificed for us.

If it wasn't for them we wouldn't have the freedom we enjoy today.:helpme::bravo::helpme:

Virgil, and to the rest of the great men and women of the armed forces who have selflessly given their time, heart, or lives to the cause of Freedom.

Nice story Jr.

:( Sorry to hear 68

:clap: Thanks for the story JR

I lost my grandfather when I was 11, he served in the South Pacific also. He was a heavy equipment operator, a bull dozer as I remember. I vaguely remember a story about him being shot at, and he took the dozer and filled the cave the bullets were coming from.

R.I.P. Virgil, Thanks your sacrifices.

There should be another phrase, cause "Happy Veterens Day" just doesn't sound right.

Mayby a salute smiley?
