Have you checked out linkedin.com?
It's a pretty good way to find people that are connected to you through professional association - i.e. worked at the same place, went to school together, etc..
The great thing is that you can then see other people that are connected to people that you know - if there is a good reason for you to connect with that friend of a friend, you can ask your friend to "introduce" you.
It's better than things like facebook in the sense that the connections you make are more for professional reasons than for social reasons.
....and recruiters crawl the site all the time. I've been called a few times based on my profile.
