While I'm in this straight jacket, I can't be
After nearly 19 years of down time, I'm playing bass live again...sort of. 2 months ago, I received a phone call from the music director at my church. The bass player for the 11:00 Sunday Mass was moving, and was I interested in taking over? I had a fairly fresh set of strings on the bass, and nothing better to do Sunday morning or Thursday evening; I said, "sure." This was Sunday night. Monday morning, the music director drops off the sheet music and a CD at the house. Thursday evening, we get together and practice for and hour and a half. Sunday Morning, I'm performing in front of 500 people, doing songs I'd never heard (it's not like I ever went to church,) on 90 minutes of practice time.[smilie=2: In the old days, we'd spend 90 minutes learning 1 song, let alone doing 7 new songs each week along with the 'carry-over' songs we do every week. Now, the callouses are back, the 'carry-over' tunes are old hat, and I'm actually learning the songs with just one practive. It reminds me of the old days of Jazz Band in high school, but at least there we practiced 5 days a week. Fortunately, I'm not sight reading bass clef, but just playing off guitar chord charts and listening to the CD. The wife says going to Mass every Sunday doesn't hurt me any either.
So, now the music director wants put something together (just him and me) for the 'talent show' on October 13. He's determined I have a wacked out sense of humor, know all the old church songs (hey, 9 years of catholic schooling doesn't EVER go away) and I write my own music. I'm hoping my extensive knowledge of DR Demento will bail me out. Wish me luck!:giggedy:
