Passon's new 5 speed.....

Drowning deep in my sea of loathing...so I'm
Anyone following, or see the article in the latest Mopar mag about Passon performance all new 5 speed (A-855).

Finally a no cutting 5 speed tranny for our old mopars. But at approx $4300 it ain't a cheap unit. But it's completely manufactured in the USA with all US built parts...so bravo to Jamie Passon for going the extra mile to do things right.

cant you get a richmond 6 for that price?.......
hell at that price id grab a toyota or nissan unit have a bellhousing adapter made and still be in for as hell of alot less..or even a vette unit

ill give credit for being reasonably stock looking but its NOT a mopar unit any more so its no better or worse than a supra 5 or 6spd

But any other 5/6 speed is going to require you to cut your car up. For the people who don't want to modify their cars this is a great option, direct bolt in, no cutting or other mods required.

me thinks an A would require a lil massaging.....and it looks like the cross member might need a notching..course i could be way off

I spent last night reading all about this tranny. Seems he has an A-body unit as well....no cutting either.

Cool!
I saw that in the mag, but haven't read the article yet.

Of course, I'd have to cut my car up for that........ because mine are automatics. :D

for a fifth gear i would be on board, but for that price i jumped into the water.

A gear-vendors tail shaft unit costs less then that...and you don't have any car mods either...for the most part. And with a GV unit you now have a 8 speed....:)

see and thats EXACTLY part of my thinking cow...its sooooooo crazy priced you can do better in many different ways for ALOT less..still give him credit for making is "look" stock

You ever notice that stuff like this is always priced, at a level that makes you think more than twice?

I mean if it were $3k+, I could see it, a TKO600 is like $2500, and another grand for something that bolts in,
and is likely stronger, seems OK to me. Im the prime target market for that. Ive got two 440 cars, that I would prefer
to maintain the stock floorpan configuration.

But its $1000+ more than that. That might be worth doing some cutting...(Also double the price of a rebuilt 18spl 4spd...)

Given the way the underdrive in my truck works (US Gear), Im not sure those are
the panacea, that the rags would have you believe...

I was under the impression that it was to be priced in the neighborhood of $3000, based on what I'd read on it... I'd not yet seen pricing.

A couple of things to consider, though... the GV units muck up your driveline angles, and they don't mention torque capacity. The Richmond transmissions are only rated for 450lbs/ft, whereas Passon's is very-conservatively rated for 600, which is higher than any of the Nissan or Toyota transmissions (yes, I've also seen where they take far beyond their factory ratings, it's a moot point).

The engineering behind the Passon unit is impressive--preloaded tapered rollers rather than straight rollers? Awesome. Massive gears too. The thing is far-more stout than its rating suggests, but I'm sure it's a measure of Mr. Passon having to draw the line somewhere. The write-up in Mopar Action is excellent from a technical standpoint (as usual); I would not expect any other magazine got as in-depth since they all suck.

One thing about the "fit" issue, though... Kevin has a Keisler TKO500 in his '71 R/T, and it fit perfectly. All the installation parts required came with it, right down to the driveshaft and crossmember. So while Passon is right that "they do not fit!", he's apparently not looking at/considering the complete Keisler installation kits. Oh, and Kevin says it's not likely his 18-spline will ever move from under his bench again, unless for some reason he sells the car. I don't see that happening.

All that being said, I'm still looking for a reasonable Toyota R154 trans (1987-'92 Supra Turbo) to use in the Imperial... I have to cut the car anyhow to put in the stick (I can use all factory parts to do it with an A833), but the handle coming up through the center of the tunnel actually appeals to me since I'll probably run a console. Also, the R154 is pretty bulletproof from what I've read, but then again--much of what I've read dealt with HP rather than torque.

exactly where me and fishy are doc..on the hunt for the supra 5 or 6 unless we go nissan....those trans have been seen HOLDING up to insanity launchings from insanity motors and then theres the stick..no linkage to be sloppy just a stick on a ball thats FLUID and give you REAL feedback...any more it seems like the smarter option for anything remotely modified from stock
