numbers matching....?

How do I tell if the tranny has been changed out of my 68 Charger? How about a quick tutorial on determining numbers matching....please?

Look at the numbers... if they match, you have matching numbers. If the numbers are different, then you have a rare "numbers-differing" car. That was an option, ordered to confuse thieves into thinking the car was probably already stolen and they owe someone new shoes. If that's the case, you'll probably find that the trunk seal is upside down, at which point you should just crush the car and buy a goat.

LOL @ P.

Is it an awfulmatic?

If it is I think the numbers are just above the trany pan. Look for a pad with the numbers stamped in it.

Thanks smartass. :D from what I recall, 68 and prior do not match the actual vin. Anyone else?

Actually, '68 and up match the VIN. In fact, it should have the entire VIN, unlike later years which only have the last 8 digits.

While you're looking at all these numbers, you should see if the sequence on the transmission matches the one on the engine, and the one on the dash... can you imagine such coincidence?! [smilie=E:

sounds like a conspiracy! thanks, that was the answer I needed to be re-assured of. and Stretch, sorry bud, bad timing....I was talking about Jass. ;)

I don't recall ( actually I just don't give a shit [smilie=e: ) what year they changed to putting the end of the vin on the engine and tranny. IIRC before they did that the only thing you can do is make sure the tranny case casting date is a little (probably no more than 1 to 2 months max) before the cars build date. I belive that would be considered correct [smilie=e: . If I'm wrong, just refer back to my first sentence.

Don't think the 68 engines had the VIN stamped on 'em.

That started in 69, no?

Trannies? Maybe. I dunno.

You should find at aleast this info:

stamped down beside the oil pan flange is the formal serial number for the block.

the first numbers are the date of the stamping i.e. 3-12-69

then letters to designate the assembly plant for the engine - not the car..
K=Toluca M=Mound Road MV or MN=Marysville PT=Trenton, T=Trenton T is used on 400 and 440s only - otherwise PT is used.

next three digits represent the displacement i.e. 383, 440, 416, etc.

next 4 digits are the 10000-day calendar numbers

final 4 number show what number the block was for THAT day at THAT plant.

Up on the stamping boss near the distributor, you should see:
D383 - D=1968 383 = umm 383
and you could se other stuff on there too.

TW or WT sometime the W is upside down = water test
A diamond = 0.008-in oversize tappets
Maltese cross = 0.001-in undersized crankshaft
Maltese cross and an X = 0.010-in undersized crankshaft
A = 0.0020-in oversized cylinder bore
B = 0.010-in undersized main rod and bearing
E = cast crankshaft
H = standard 4bbl
HP = high performance
LC = low compression
O.S. = 0.005 oversized valve stem
P = premium fuel recommended
S = special engine
X = oversized valve guides

Does that mean that it came from Colorado?? [smilie=e:

For what it's worth, not all '68's had numbers matching. They started it sometime that year, so it's possible to have 2 '68 cars all original and one may have matching numbers and the other won't. Dave

Early 68's were built with SO #'s,,and later 68's they started with the VIN system,but 99% of late D series(1968) engines,have the VIN stamped on the top rear of the block,beside the oil pressure sending unit,not on the lower block skirt near the oilpan,that started in '69,,if your engine has it's vin stamped back there,on the top backside of the block, then your trans will match,,the vin will be between the top 2 trans bolts,nearer the pass. side,,,close to the oil sending unit,like I said earlier.
