not MoPar but I was almost walking

Robertson_Tech

Dopameans and SodaPals proud dad.
I tried to make the dart last but the head gasket had other ideas.

The Volvo is back ordered on a new cam.

My katana ( that I was counting on to get out of the shop last fri ) is waiting parts again the carbs were put back together wrong and it will need a lot more parts.

This left the dart and could have used a little bailing wire and kept driving it around town today I needed to run to pueblo colorado then to denver and back.

When I left the bike shop I stopped by the salvation army car lot if I was going to get a POS my money should help someone.

They were out of MoPars ( not a lot here in the springs ) I did see a 78 ford bronco that was marked down from 3500 to 1500. I asked what was up...

Here is the story I got it came in a few years ago but was it has 11.5 x 33s and a 400 w/o POWER STEERING they cant see it and anyway some broke in a stole the speakers but the sony xpod was still there. It has a reman motor it is just a pain to steer.

I start it and it is running on 4-5 cylinders ( sales man it needs a tuneup because it just gets test drove and now has fouled the plugs.) Sure.

I started to take it spiting and sputtering on a test drive the sales man warns me that it is real hard to drive. As the motor is not building any vacuum at idle the power brakes do not work. This is fun.:toot:

We take it a block and it runs out of gas I help push it then I have to help a friend move as I am walking away I ask will you take 750.00?

No but I will take 950.

I ask if they take debit you will have to come back tue..

Tue morning my friend picks me up and drops me off down town so I can but the ford or take a buss to pueblo and denver.

I ask the mec neck what he knows about the motor.... Its a new 460 just has a bad plug...

I see that all the smog equip is long gone and the headers feed into 2.25 in pipes I do not know anything about 460 390s yes 460 no.

After a hr of paper work I pay with my debit (that was strange ) and drive off.

The steering is so hard because the tires are at under 10 psig I pull onto the freeway to pueblo and it is shaking and missing I can not get up to 55 mph at first..

In my shop in pueblo I swapped the plugs after looking up the motor info it is a 351. After the plugs it runs a lot better, that is until the fuel line picks up crap from the tank I limp it to denver and back I had to blow on the fuel like 3 time to clear blocks but for the last 30 miles it ran fine. I think I put 300 miles on it...

I wanted to buy the dodge ramcharger that I posted a few weeks ago but the fenders, seats, and tires are shot on the ramcharger. They are all great on the ford so the ford got the nod..

I think I got a good deal and it is just something to use to take motors to the machine shop.... ( after I get something else done)

I sure miss my jeep....

Which 351 is it? Is it a windsor, the 351 modified boat anchor, or a cleveland that somebody swapped in? My guess is it's the modified, which will give you the worst of all worlds: big, heavy as hell, weak, AND a gas guzzler. They can be fairly reliable though, and if it was cheap enough then it's worth it.

WO-WO-WO---- boatanchor? thats all i ran was a 351 --400 block better known as a 351 modified. they are a great engine. heavy crank to... go for power and speed when done up like any other engine. however - check the timing and bump it ahead. sounds like it is running lower than it should.. should run around 800rpm.- reg . 2 barrell carb will do it good. usually carb cleaner looks after that. plugs were a good thing. i usually ran 2 inline filters and go to the hardware store paint section and by a gal of alchol. put about a 1/2 a gal in the next fill up and it will help clean up what ever is in there.that should cost you about 5 bucks. take the thermostat out and run it that way. sometimes it works . i had 2 trucks a 78-79 with same engines and both seem to run different don,t ask why - don,t know - but what discribed is for the one that didn,t run right, and it ran fine after i broke it in to the way i wanted. they both plowed snow and were work trucks year round. the inline filters - 1 was at the tank and the other was 3 feet from the engine .....they are a most reliable engine Bill. don,t be afraid of it ..and when setting the timing on it do this----- i set by ear. -- but when you got it set turn it off and count to 10 then reach in the door and start the engine without touching the gas. when you get it starting using that method it will run fine.. worked well for me and all the other ones that i worked on... as for a 460 yup gas guzzler but it has the gohonies to do what you want when you want and wont back down---- good luck:giggedy::toot:

Thanks just need it as a daily driver until all the volvo parts get in. Then I will need it to haul motors until the 71 dodge is running the parts guy was able to see the tag on the motor and he said it was a 351 windser it has a 2v carb the heads have a big M on them.

Cheap I paid 950 for a rust free driving thing I can use as a SUV or a truck so I think I got it cheap but you have to admit it was risky buying it not running well. But you get the best rewards with risk..

$950 for a rust free bronco? Yep, you did well. You'll easily make more than that off it when you sell it. To get a final answer on which 351 it is, how many bolts hold each valvecover on? If it's 8, it's a 351m.

other than the real old ones that's about my favorite style bronco / SUV in fact. a'course 78 I was 12 and everything new was cool! got a story that's hard to tell It goes on a "most embarrassing moment" thread once in awhile :D

351M pistons fit the bore of a 400 but sits about a quarter inch lower and makes for a real dog:bwuhaha:especially cool when it's another classes instructor's vehicle ;)

They'll sit EXACTLY 1/4" lower-the stroke of the 400 is 4.00", and the stroke of the 351m is 3.5".

No problem with pinging LOL glad it was not your instructors that might have hurt your grade.

it has 8 and a large M cast into the head. So the sticker on the valve cover is marked 351

I did not know anything about this offshoot of the Cleveland mine seams to have too large of a cam for the stock 2v but once it is over 2k rpm it is running better and better.

I did that first and it picked up a lot.

thanks I will got some.

Kind of cool I paid for it with a debit card ( so just extra cash on hand ) and by the end of the day had over 300 miles on it up to 360 now... I was sure worried when I first tried to get on the freeway and it would not come up to speed no problems now.

Now I just need to fix the dash lites and hookup the sony xpod that came with it and I will be good to go.

In 1978, 5th digit of VIN is engine size: H is 351 2 bbl, S is 400 (all were 2 bbl). All factory 78 Bronco's had 351M's or 400's. Modifieds (and Clevelands) have 8 bolts per valve cover, fuel pump bolts over and under, and the thermostat bolts to the block. Windsors have 6 bolts per valve cover, fuel pump bolts side to side, and thermostat bolts to the intake manifold. 351M's and 400's are visually identical, only differ in stroke. Factory camshaft is retarded 4 degrees, putting a set of good timing gears and moving the cam straight up really wakes up the 351-400 up. A small 4 barrell on an aluminum intake helps. If memory serves, there is a hole in the top of the block that matches with a hole in the cyl head, but no matching hole in head gasket. Opening up the hole in the head gasket makes the engine run about 20 degrees cooler. Remember, 351-400 heads are really cleveland 2bbl heads, they flow quite well, so lots of potential.

BTW, 351 cleveland has SBF tranny bolt pattern, Modifieds have 429/460 trans bolt pattern. So a 460 will bolt up to your tranny, BUT you'll need a custom flywheel if its a 4 speed. Also, the mounts are different, no factory mounts will work, but there's plenty in the aftermarket. You'll need an Econoline 460 oil pump, pick-up tube and pan to finish the job.

I do not really want to make this a project,,but I do know where a 460 is LOL with the 351M it now is running better and better with spin the 11.5 33s at will but darn I drove easy freeway cruz up to denver yesterday and I got < 8 MPG I used my debit card and it stopped filling at 75 dollers that would have given me 8 MPG but it was not full... Still it ran nice except for starving for gas a few times, I am starting to think vapor lock as it happens now I get stuck in traffic or turn it off for a bit.

Shocker time I saw that it had a oil change sticker on the windscrean when I bought it I checked the milage and the odo read 77K and the sticker said next change due at 79 K I just checked the DATE 11/14/97 so this has not had a lot of use in a LONG time. No wonder I am having fuel problems.

So far 600 miles.... in 3 days....
