Niagara Falls

EEEEEEEKKKKK! it's a
Wife told me she wants to go to the falls this April. I personally have no problem with going to the falls as I have never been, but I am wondering if April is a little to early. Any of our northern friends have any input? I am so not into ice. I am thinking more like July or August.
Just how touristy is it? If it's anything like Gatlinburg TN, I don't know if I wanna go.
US side or Canadian side, or visit both?

I vote for the Canadian Side but I might be a little biased.

The Canadian side is very touristy though - but a lot cleaner.

The NY side - once you get out of the park area is pretty rough looking.
The Canadian side has it's rough areas, too, but it's easier to avoid them - I think.
Plus, if you drive 15 minutes in about any direction, you can be in the country - wine country even. A lot of U.S. tourists like to visit Niagara-On-The-Lake, too - lots of War of 1812 history there.

April may or may not be a good time. It's really hard to tell.
I've seen t-shirt and jeans weather for the first few weeks and then a week of snow as winter says good bye and spring says hello.

..and we could meet up and have dinner or something. Maybe a cruise in the New Yorker.

As a grizzled veteran of the New York side and frequent passenger on Our Lady of the Mist or whatever that crazy boat was called, I can vouch for April as a great time to go. And I resent "rough" references to the New York side. MAX two knife fights while I was there.... and one of them wasn't even me!

I heartily agree with DCF re: the Canadian side........also a little biased. I live approx. 40 klm from the Falls, and in the summer, we go almost every Sunday night in the Valiant to "cruise the Lane". (Lundy's Lane) There is tons more to see on the Canadian side.......the Niagara Parkway is gorgeous, you can't miss Clifton Hill (Ripley's Believe it Or Not, the Wax Museum, etc.), and, if you can swing it, continue on up the Parkway to N.O.T.L, as DCF suggested. My favourite town in the whole world to visit. And, since the exchange on the dollar is now in your favour again, it makes sense, yes? As for visiting in April, I would try for closer to the end of April..........I gots a feelin' this winter is gonna be holding on for a while!
If you are gonna come on over, all of us locals should try to hook up.
:bravo:

As of right now, its looking like the Canadian side. If I can get a new set of shocks under the Dart, I'd love to bring it up. Any good photo op area's?

There are TONS of great photo spots, pretty much anywhere along the Niagara Parkway........it follows the Niagara River all the way from Fort Erie (opposite Buffalo) right up to Niagara-On-The-Lake. It's a beautiful drive, with lots of spots to stop for pics, with or without said Dart. Not sure if you could find a spot to get a shot of it with N.F. in the background, but maybe.

well having been there at both seasons ...

the winter one was cool .. because of how the ice formed at the falls ... it made it unique ...

the summer .. it was amazing .. just because its so ... picturesque?

either or .. it is neat to see at both times ...

enjoy .. and be sure to take the niagra on the lake journey .. did that the last time in the winter .. and saw the whirl pool .. and kept on truckin along...

Yeah. I can't think of a spot that you could do that. The whole area is pretty much a "No Stop" zone. There is some parking on the road, but that's on the opposite side and you'd be hard pressed to get the car and the falls in the same shot.

But the parkway: tons of beautiful scenery and plenty of places to stop.

If you have any interest in big ships, the Welland Canal is about 10 minutes away. Lock 3 is the touristy spot, but there's a pretty cool observation deck.
Now looking at big ships sounds pretty odd unless you're into them, but watching these things go into the locks and seeing how the locks operate is pretty cool. It's worth an hour of your time if you've never seen anything like it.. and if you want to get some exercise, there's a recreation trail that runs pretty much the entire length of the canal - you can walk, run, roller blade, cycle, or sit and ogle all day long.

A wine tour is fun, too. When you go in, tell the sommelier that you're a member of the wine club and the prices on the tasting menu disappear. Just don't try and do the same at the store checkout because they check there. If the sommelier checks (it's rare) just say you used to be a member and are not sure if it's still valid.
We actually are members of the Hillebrand and Peller wineries (one club, two wineries), but we noticed this dynamic while doing a winery tour last summer with a bunch of Chrysler LX car owners. In fact when they are really busy, you just tell them what you want to taste and when you're done, thank them and drift off to shop. They don't really care. They seemed to take money from the people that offered it, but if you didn't, they didn't ask.

I'm rambling... I'll stop now.

No, that's not rambling, that's good info. I'll keep the locks in mind. I live on the Ohio River so I know how they work, but you'll never see any thing bigger than a barge on the Ohio.
The vacation calender is dictating that the trip be late April or early May. So hopefully things will be in bloom and give the wife the oww & ahhh effect.

Blooms? Then you'll want to check out the Botanical Gardens along the Niagara Parkway - it's on the way to N-O-T-L.

and the Floral Clock. It's just passed the Sir Adam Beck Generating station - they have public tours of that, too.

Exactly what I was gonna say DCF....... There are also helicopter rides, near where the Floral Clock is. Don't know cost, never done it myself, but I bet it would be breathtaking. They are sure popular, they are always flying over the city. If you are looking for somewhere to stay, check out The Great Wolf Lodge, it is also along the Parkway. Never stayed there, but have friends who have, and they say it is awesome, especially if you are into waterparks:
