new dash or dash cap?

BB71Challenger

comparing distributors and
on my 71 challenger the dash was recovered some time in the past with regular vinyl and it looks like ass. should i bite the bullet and get a whole new repop or a cap? this is taking into account that i dont know wtf its gonna look like under that vinyl mess. the cap i saw on ebay looks pretty nice to tell the truth and this will not be a show car but a rompm stompm fun car. money is tight but i would much rather spend the 500 for a new dash than get the cap and its a waste of time and money. has anyone used a cap on here? thanks for any info and as always your reply is appreciated.

My friend has one in a Mach 1. I think it looks like ass.

BUT Im a stickler, so my best advice is to go to some shows, and check one out. There's always a cheap ass there, who has one...

I've seen a few of them in shows. It takes about 2 seconds to spot one. They look like a cheap way to cover your dash.

thanks for the honest replies, id hate to spend a buck fifty on something that looks like ass lol. me thinks ill just have to pop for a repop dash. anyone buy a new dash from somewhere like justdashes? there is someone marketing rebuilt dashes online but you have to send them a core and that sounds like a lotta trouble.

When I re-did my R/T ragtop I sent my core to JustDashes, it cost me $275 + shipping both ways. But they sure do gorgeous work. [smilie=c:

I've got a dash pad on my Beetle - I'm one of those cheap asses :) - it doesn't fit too bad and most people don't notice it. It is definately a cheap ass way to go.

We've sent some cores to Just Dashes over the years and they came back looking better than new. They weren't cheap, but can you put a price on quality?

a buck fifty!?!?!? [smilie=e: The ones Im talking about were like $70 (US) I think... If I gave $150 for one, Id be totally disgusted (I usually am, tho LOL)

Just Dashes quoted me $500, when I called them. :(

BUT this is yet another discussion, where I have NEVER heard anyone say anything bad about their quality of work. In fact, always the exact opposite, as seen here, also!!

Makes me feel better about sending my stuff off to them, if I ever amass the shekels...

Resto,

If I had a beetle, I woulda just doused the dash with gasoline, and fired it up. Woulda solved the whole problem!!!!! -Just kidding, I know you're partial to the little thing!!! As long as you like it, thats what matters!!

Humm, doused the dash with gasoline?
Would it Bee a fire fly then???? [smilie=e:
I think it would BEE just a Fire Bug [smilie=2: j/k Mike I like the old VW's! Bugs, Kamm and Squarebacks, Karmann-Ghias, The Thing and the Old Micro Busses, and Trucks! [smilie=e: I learned to drive a manual tranny in a 75 Dasher Wagoon! [smilie=e:

yeah i guess i will just wait to get a good dash. is it ok to do things like windshield installation before putting in the dash? the reason i ask is because back when i got my challenger in 94 the original was all sand blasted and i got it replaced. how hard is it to install a dash with the windshield still in it? id love to have the original white interior back but since the seats were redone and the interior color changed to black it would be pretty expensive to change it back [smilie=c:

Here is the change I did, It is a great investment as you always see the dash while you are driving. I thought about the dash caps but they look like plastic and I would have been unhappy looking at it all the time.

To replace the dash pad you need to remove the instrument cluster, radio, glove box and anything else that may be in the way.

It would be a shame to have to go thru it twice.

I once repaired a pad by smoothing the edges on the cracks and spraying catalyzed clearcoat with flexitive added. Had to throw the gun away afterwards due to the fact that I ended up with slimy jello in the cup and innards when it set up after only 15 minutes of pot life. Covered the bad spots with some harley wings first and it looked ok. [smilie=e:

We bought a whole parts car once just for the dash pad. [smilie=e: It was well worth it because the pad was mint, and it now resides in my Duster. Luckily we ended up making money on the parts car, so I guess we got the dash pad for free.

Those E-body parts are so expensive. My hubby wants to start on his Challenger, and I've already priced some of the stuff he needs. OH MY GOD, I thought A-body stuff was high. [smilie=e:

i hear what you are saying. i once bought a parts car pretty much for the tail lights. the bad thing is where i live here in NM it stays 100+ over 1/2 the year with another 1/4 close to 90. its great for rust free exteriors but hell on interiors so anything that does not live in a garage is toast. 500+ does seem high for a dash pad but i have heard only good things about the repop dashes. ill just have to say ill be upgrading the brakes to disc front and back before i get a new dash or even paint the car so its not on my short list of priorities but the info has been stored and im a non cap believer now [smilie=e:
