New Beetles: Fair warning to those who own or are considering

mopar_man

Good time party boy
The new Beetles have plastic impellers on the water pumps. Using your melon and you can figure out this isn't a good idea. And the replacement? Plastic impeller again :doh:I always though VW had some decent engineering behind their stuff. And this happened around 100,000 kms (60,000 miles). Just fair warning if you or anyone you know owns one or is going to buy one.

One of our customers had one of those new Beetles...nothing but problems. They were more than happy to get rid of it. :dgt:

These people have never had much for problems with it except that. I guess there's problem cars of every make though.

I think they are cute.

*please note, the forementioned phrase was uttered out of fear of Restoman, who not only has a new Beetle, he also has my Charger...and my truck. *

Yup, I gots one o' those.
Has it fair share of problems, the one we have I think was mis-treated for a time. The tranny lagged on the upshift if hammered real hard. But it lasted for almost three years before a replacement was necessary. WARNING: Used VW parts are EXPENSIVE - $1400 was the best price I could get for a used trans.

Replaced both front hub assemblies, both power window switches and both window cable drives (probably the problem Beeper's customer had - simple fix and the repair kit is in stock at the dealer).

Overall tho', its a pretty decent car. I took it apart this past summer for re-paint and was impressed at the build quality - even tho' its Hecho e Mexico. We've put 70,000 on it in a little over three years.
Its got a good stereo too - thanks XL. :)

Plastic components? Doesn't surprise me about ANY newer cars.

XL, I didn't know you had a Charger and a truck. And you say they're at my shop? Can you describe them?

Hey Mike, that would be those new modern art shelving units you had in the shop would it? :toot: :bwuhaha: :bwuhaha:

Way too much plastic on all the newer stuff. That Yukon I stuffed the crate motor in has a plastic front cover with *do not re-use* printed on the front. I was careul and glued it on the new motor and guess what? It leaks. Different bolt pattern than the metal ones and mr badwrench thinks they are worth a couple hundred.

Ok, ok. Let me get this straight..:hmmm: Something clearly labeled "do not re-use" was indeed "re-used" and a problem occured?

Ya don't say.........:bwuhaha:

OK I screwed up again- rub it in. I didnt crack it and couldnt see any reason why it had to be shitcanned. Welcome to the throw away world I guess, its leaking down the side- not the main seal so who knows why it died. Chevy sucks anyway and this is just another reason why.[smilie=l:

Nah, had those towed away long ago.

Thanks again Mike.

I use the black shelf as a workbench. I just flipped it upside down, jumped on it a bit to flatten out the "base" and put some 4X4 posts under the corners.

The other thing makes a great recylcing container in the side yard. With the bonus motor to drive it to the curb every week. I had to write "do not remove" on the side after the collectors tried to put it in the truck a few times...

My Bonne-crap-ville had a plastic bypass fitting that went into the intake manifold. Guess what happened to the fitting? The replacements are however, steel.
The engineers and bean counters that allow hot/cold cycling parts to be made of easily deteriorating parts should be made to eat the existing inventory. And then shot with balls of their own chit.
