Mythbusters at it again

I have heard the myth that driving with the tailgate DOWN
was better for mileage. Seems pretty logical, but I've been
told otherwise (but never actually saw proof either way).

Well, the TV show Mythbusters took on this tailgate myth.
Indeed, it's better to keep the tailgate UP when driving to
maintain maximum fuel economy. What a great episode.
They even had a little "water tunnel" with a model truck to
visually show how the tailgate up was more efficient, too.

I read a report showing air tunnel results and mpg results for a cap, a tonneau cover, tailgate up and tailgate down. Interestingly enough, the tailgate up with nothing on it produced the best results. Go figure, seems against all logic. :wtf:

I also learned of this little tidbit of information while shopping for my truck.

Appearently with the gate in the up position an air pocket is created in the bed causing the the rushing air to flow smoothly over it. Interesting info indeed as I had always thought gate down was best.

I dont quite get it either, with it up- any debris gets blown towards the front of the box which proves there is turbulance. I guess those stupid little wings on the lightning and daytona serve a purpose after all.:hmmm:

Would that air pocket create a little downforce as well? Might be good in those high speed maneuvors on the beer run.

Not turbulance but the air pocket I mentioned. Some air is "caught" by the gate and then moves forward along the box floor and up the rear of the cab and back again to the gate. This causes a pressure change in the box forcing the flow of air over the gate.
