The Sterling Heights Stamping plant, close to Detroit and Warren, Michigan, willhave new press lines next year. They are already under construction, start up late this year, and hit full volume in 2016. The cost to FCA is over$166 million.
Sterling Heights has been making body panels and assemblies for fifty years. The new lines will include two 180-inch Servo Tandem press lines and one large Servo Progressive line, allowing the plant to increase its output by around 20 million stampings per year (it currently makes 62 million per year).
The new pressesincrease output, reliability, and energy efficiency alike, with fully programmable speed and movement control, unlike mechanical presses. The tandem presses have multiple presses in a series, with a single die positioned in each one to incrementally make apart; the progressive press has one slide and has a single die do multiple operations, for high-speed production.
