Low oil pressure in my GTX...grrrrrr

Started up my GTX this morning after being plugged in for a couple of hours and to my suprise it SLOWLY climbed to 20 psi and topped out at 30 psi at 1500-1600 rpm:wtf: (it usually has 95 psi) Sure hope it's the relief valve...
Now it's going to bug me all winter long:hmmm:

#%^%#@ $HIT BOX..!!

What weight oil? Be very careful of your oil pump drive, Let it idle for a bit and cross your fingers man. Might be the filter too.:hmmm:

I have straight 50 Racing in it but I had it plugged in so with duel block heaters it was 160-170 before I started it...and it's inside a heated garage and it's 80 degrees in there...I hope the relief valve spring broke because the adj nut is tight...

Dude this is not good. Gotta love big blocks at a time like this though. You have either spun out the drive or worse, get it tore down now. Its like a 15 minute job to bench that pump assembly complete and we know this.;)

Oil pump drive looks like it's never turned the pump...I had the pan off in Sept to fix a leak and checked the brgs and they looked as if the engine was never started...it had 80 psi hot at idle when I parked it so I think it's pretty much leaning towards the relief valve spring...
after 30 years of beating on big blocks it's about time I had a relief valve spring break on me...I've seen it happen 4 times in 30 years...

Or perhaps a faulty gauge?.........

That would be OK with me:dance:

Randy...big blocks have a relief valve and spring in the cover of the oil pump (the portion of the pump that has the oil filter provision)
this low deck of mine has a Milodon pump and cover with an adj. valve so you can adj the oil presure if it's too high or low...

Rob with the quality of builds you do, its definitely not from old or sub par equipment. Odds on the spring - or playing devil's advocate, busted intermediate shaft and friction alone is spinning the pump - J/K. Spring.

The spring is easily accessable and a good place to start. External pickups are way cool but is it possible something has gotten into the screen on that swingarm?:hmmm:
