Looking for...

The paint fumes have cleared so I'm
A qualified auto body repairman or painter.

Any body know someone looking for work?

Well, XL drops by the shop so often its almost like he works there. :)

Seriously, its a sad state of affairs in the automotive trade in South Western Ontario. Soo long have things been slow there are very few journeymen in left in the trade. And no new recruits either. :(

So, anyone know anyone looking for work?

If I ever get tired of telling the body shops what to do, and how much I'll pay them to do it, I'll call you. :D

Seriously, you're right...it's a dying art. Vo-ed programs are drying up. Most older techs are getting out because it's hard on your body, and most kids don't want to get their hands dirty. Those that do would rather be mechanics and make $24/hr flat rate than be a body/paint guy for $16/hr flat rate. Blame my industry for the pay difference. :(

Body work and paint is something I surely would love to learn. I think it would be awesome to prep and shoot my own car correctly. To me there is just something about someone who can do all phases of restoration/restification that gets mucho respect.

I actully like the idea of painting cars (and i don't mind getting dirty...you remember that one kind when you were growing up that was always dirty? Yeah, that was me :bwuhaha: )

Hell, i custom painted my microwave (its black with metallic blue flames, did a primer, base, then clear, its was fun i thought)

I even have the latest "Advance Custom Painting Techniques" by Jon Kosmoski. And as far as knowlage of tools, water in the air lines sucks casue you can get the fish eye effect, and an HVLP paint sprayer (preferd siphon fed cause gravy feed is a little hard on the wrist when its full) and always have an air compresser that hold more air than you need. You can paint with a small one, but you won't do a good job and its annoying as hell waiting for it to refill.

But, otherwise, i'm clue less on what it takes, plus i'd probably look for a higher dollar job so i can afford to fix up cars as my hobby.

No NAC, I blame the various levels of goverment (sorry Gio) and the school system for the shortages.
And the industry itself. :(

Around here, flat rate bodymen still command about $20 -$25 per hour, but the days of making $50 - $75 G's per year are long gone. Hourly guys make about $20 ish per hour.

Trying to find someone who knows their head from their ass, shows up on time every day, and actually shows some pride in their work is pretty difficult.

But I'll keep looking.
I'm greedy. I have two excellent employees now, I want a third. :)

I'd say if i lived closer and if you were willing to teach i'd be up for it. I'm always on time for work (i think i was late once...that was 4 years ago), and i'd take pride in a job if i know i worked hard on it. But southern ontario is a bit far for me, sorry.

I would much rather see you looking for another employee than posting how much it sucks to have to let someone go because there is a lack of work. Glad things are on the upswing for ya restoman

Yeah, we're one of the busier shops, for sure.
Its been five years since I've opened, had the shop filled on the first day, and have gotten busier each year.

How much to paint my challenger? or should I ask? its only been painted 3 different colors on top of the original butterscotch. :shifty:

hey bb fax the car to me ill get it painted and fax it back to ya :bwuhaha:

Jeez - gotta say that I don't know too many automotive techs that are making more than $12 - $16/hr. around here...

Heavy-duty/diesel mechanics are up in the $20-$25 range, but regular auto repair guys typically only do a little better than 1/2 that.

It doesn't stop the garages from billing 'em out at $60/hr. tho....
