Blah Blah Blah
so..ive been riding since i was 5 when i got my first bike...i remember what was on that showroom floor VERY well and leaving with my z50....and a few "bigger" bikes over the years had caught my eye but that was a LONG time ago (1980)

so..a little re-cap.....

i got this bugger for 300$..and have put a little into it 150ish...and pretty well done

ive had my old 86 sx200 for ages..shes beat to hell and tough as nails..want that car dragged no problem..go stump jumping that works too
Picture1110.jpg

now...ive been hunting off and on for a mid 80s honda..very specificaly a "pro link" bike preferably with disc front drum rear..the billy bad ass of the hondas from back when i was old enuf to have gotten onto a 250 and been off racing....and what do i find ..

what i was "told" and thought was a xl500(enduro) for a talked down 200$..got it running after a break flush and re-asssemble of the carb"S"(yes 2)....after taking it apart i find the cc on the jug staing its a 600?!?!?!? i ran the vin and sure inuf its the king of the era a 600 enduro full adjustable rear shock with dial adjust and forks with air valves in the top to adjust

Picture2561.jpg

in front of the 600 is another one i went and rescued talked the guy down and got for 200$ a 1980 xl125...ive not gotten into her yet but the trans doesnt catch in any gear soooo...but aide from that she is remarkably complete only missing the tail light 1 and battery side cover and turn signals.....the 600 is missing the volt reg, tail light, pretty much all of the lighting wiringing and controls

and this old girl..my second bike and my mothers bike a elisnore mr175 that was last registered in 75...she is currently in bits as i bring her back from the dead...i was young the clutch was toast and i left her outside far far far toooo long
Picture2219.jpg

can you say i have a honda thing LOL...but i dont have any intention of keeping all of them..the MR is family so yeah keep it...the 125 will get a full resto and ill flip it for a hefty profit the 500 will also likely get flipped ..the 600 yeah im keeping that bitch!!!!!...id like to get my hands on a mid 80s 250 and a 2000+ 400ex tho the EX would HAVE to be for trade they are crazy high in price....its a sickness i tell you AGHHHHH

Hey Big Guy,how are ya?

The after shot of that first bike looks fantastic dude! You would never guess it ever looked like that first photo. Awesome work my friend!

And that is some wicked luck coming across that 600! I'd love to get my grubby mitts on one myself.

I picked up a fairly tasty '79 CB650 two years ago.Windjammer Fairing, full factory Honda hard luggage, custom painted tank[black with blue flames]. Rebuilt carbs, new pipes, new tires, new battery and freshly tuned for $1,200.00 But now the starter wiring is giving me grief and the beast has no kick start. Like I needed another work project, lol.

I took a serious break from dealing with full sized automotive wreckage but I'm back again. I just posted in the tech section, asking for Jeep info and since I recall you used to work on Fishy's Jeeps I'm hoping maybe you can help me figure this one out. So please check out the thread and see if you can help me out.

I'll shoot ya a PM shortly.

me and fishy just got back from a day of riding....those dogs will FLY!

i could probably figure out the wireing pretty quick on that old honda of yours

It is a sickness, missed me but got my youngest brother pretty good! Here's his toy, bought it couple years ago and has barely ridden it! Those are actual miles, and it still has the original tires, she's been garage kept her whole life!

I know, he had another one just like it when he was 14 or 15, that one was BEAT, this one looks mint! I think he wants to sell it, but he's keeping it at my dad's so it stays out of sight lol!

So far I've pulled and bench tested the starter and it is okay.I also removed, disassembled, cleaned and tested the starter button. Bought a new higher output battery. But when I hit the starter button the only thing that happens is the headlight goes completely dim. I can get it to spin over if I jump it at the little solenoid do-hickey but it won't turn over fast enough to start.

My goofy drunkard neighbor thinks its a corroded connection somewhere but with the flippen' Fairing in the way and no manual, I haven't made it too far checking connections yet.

Our garage has a dirt floor and we get wicked condensation in the winter,so I pulled the sparkplugs and gave each cylinder a couple squirts of ATF, just in case but it doesn't seem to have made any difference. So I'm going to remove the Fairing and gas tank and go through all of the wiring and connections this winter.

If that doesn't cure the issue then I'll have to sell one of my other toys so I can afford to take it to a pro in the spring.

The weird thing is that the bike worked just fine until I changed the oil before I put it away for the year ,last fall. I changed the oil and filter, took it for a short putt around town to circulate the fresh oil, shut it off and a half hour later when I went to start it, to run it into the garage. it was dead.

And for an old fart with a bad back, it is one heavy beast to have to push around. I only weigh a 175 pounds so I had to recruit a neighbor to help me push it into the garage and put it up on the high stand.

Marv, this is a pretty common problem on bikes. The start button has 2 sets of contacts, one set dims the headlight to allow full battery for starting. The other contacts engage the solenoid.

You may only need to clean the contacts.

One other possibility is the safety switch on the clutch lever or the neutral safety switch.

I've already cleaned and tested the started button and it checks out fine but I will check the other two you mentioned as soon as I can. It would be nice to ride the beast at least once this year. I still haven't broken in my new chaps and gloves yet.
And the wife paid a pretty penny for the chaps[Birthday present last year]. She is still nagging me to model them butt naked otherwise. But this Mopar Madman don't play that way, lol. I keep having these horrid visions of the Village People performing YMCA and it gives me the creepy crawlies, lol.

If those check out there should be a coupling for the right-side controls either under the gas tank or in the headlight bucket. If you have a handlebar mount fairing it should be easy to check. If it's a frame-mount, the original bucket is usually behind the fairing with a shower cap covering it.

have you tryed jumping the soliniod directly to see if it cranks?..that way you can trace the system up stream

The Windjammer Fairing is frame mounted but who ever installed it, completely removed the original headlight and turn signals. I found the connector you mentioned stuffed into a strange little pouch tucked behind the fairing. I have checked the connections and they all look good. But I still plan to check them with my volt meter to make sure everything is receiving the correct voltage.

69.5CUDA,

I have jumped the solenoid and it does turn over that way but not fast enough to start the engine. Which now has me wondering if one of the brushes in the starter isn't going bad. But its probably due to me squirting a bit of ATF into each cylinder when I was first fiddling with this problem earlier this year.

But I am more concerned by the fact that the starter fails to do anything when I hit the starter button.

no offence to the button..but to hell with the button untill youve got it cranking over at the right speed off the noid...id actualy skip everything at this point and try and just power the starter...after pulling the plugs and see what youve got..if youve got bad brushes etc..everything else upstream to the switch is only going to worsen the problem..start at the starter..then the noid(id bypass the noid with a ford unit to verify the noid isnt the problem..and then work your way up the wiring to the switch

A Ford solenoid?
Seriously now, I won't even work on that crap, much less keep any parts off of one around here. I haven't owned a non-Mopar auto of any kind in over thirty-five years! I live by the "Mopar or NO Car" motto. Heck,I'd tattoo it on my forehead if the wife would let me,she already shot down the Red Pentastar on the forehead idea, lol. No sense of humour, lol.

I'd have to drive thirty miles to an auto wrecker just to get such a cursed device.

The only guy I know that is dumb enough to own a Ford lives nearly an hour away from us.And his starter wiring nuked itself two weeks ago, lol. He is driving a GMC now.

This CB650 is the first bike I've owned since I was like 18 yrs old and I have never done more than an oil change, sparkplugs or a tire repair on a bike before. I don't have access to a manual so I have no idea where most of the stuff everyone tells me to check is.

Everything is so crammed together on this beast that I can barely do or see anything. And everything imaginable is in the way,the fairing, the gas tank, the frame.

So I have been seriously considering stripping the bike to the frame. That way I can go through the wiring from end to end, without a fight and then detail the heck out of everything as I put it back together. That is how I learned to fix my own junk as a kid, so I think it would be the best way for me to get to know this beast properly.

pull the fairing, tank and seat..at this point you should be able to access EVERYTHING

bypass the soliniod entirely and run battery power directly to the starter if it sounds slow still(with the plugs out) then youve got a starter issue....letes start there and then work our way upt ot the switch

really a soliniod is a a soiliniod...be it from a tractor a ford etc..hell the general ford unit from the 50s is still the same unit napa sells today for tractors big trucks etc..probably one of the most universal units ever

as a general rule of thumb when it comes to bikes..get it working "ok" before a full strip that way when you gut it and re-assemble it you will KNOW FOR FACT it worked before so you know you overlooked something putting it back together....the wireing itself is likely fine aside from some connector corosion.....i aint no bike guru i just grew up on the shit and after diving in head first on a few of em..it seems like the info as a kid and my dad racing stuck

Thank you 68R/T !!! I've spent hours on end trying to find a download-able manual for this thing.

Good God I hate dial up! it says its going to take three hours to download the file. And I've been up all night so I'm gonna have a hard time staying awake until it finishes.

And if anyone tries to phone us I'll have to start all over. I love the peace and quiet out here in the middle of nowhere, But I sure miss hi-speed at times like this..
