It Lives!

Hey all,

I've had this '85 D-150 longbed sitting out back for some time, with a broke 318 (long story). Bought it running and driving from the JY for $700. New tires, a lot of Re-man stuff. Guy couldnt get it to pump fuel on its own so he put in an electric inline pump which would flood it. Got tired of it, sold it to JY.

Anyway, I've been slowly working on installing a 360 into this thing out of a '79 3/4 ton Club Cab (body wasted on that thing!). Got it in this last Thursday, put the crossmember in and was going to crank it to be sure everything was good but the dang mini-starter I put on it was bad. Luckily I found the other one I had and put that on Friday, it works. Hooked up the electrical and put in the Dist, then the carb, and was able to fire it by priming it up with gas.

Today I moved the filter from before the fuel pump where the kid had it to after the pump, hooked the main line back up (I had previously took the electric one off), prayed, and then fired it off. It pumps on its own, no electric pump needed! That was a big relief and was my main concern going into this.

Now I've gotta hook up the trans cooler lines, put a tradiator in it, hoses, linkage, driveshaft, alternator, belts, a whole lotta little details but getting it fired off and running on its own was the biggest deal. Also going to put on the exhaust, using a dual system a buddy gave me off a wrecked '92 longbed that had a 318 magnum. Got manifolds and everything. NO CATS! They werent on the system when I got it and I'm not putting them on there.

Hopefully next week I can have a running/driving Truck to haul stuff with, which was the purpose of this whole build, to replace my '89 fullsize when I traded it for the '75 RR.

Well, it officially runs and drives now! Last piece to put in was the driveshaft, and after an impromptu U-Joint change on a parts truck one, she was ready to roll. Drove pretty good actually. I need to set the timing for good, and as I suspected that dang carb needs rebuilt, she runs horrid rich.

Oh yeah I forgot to clamp my topper onto the bed, took a slow turn and off she went. In the process of flying off it broke the spare windshield I pulled out of the parts truck for it [smilie=l: . Another w-shield bites the dust! It had a chip but it was still better than the one in the Truck but I'll just live with that one for now till I get another.

But at least its a runner! I'm going to hang the exhaust next week and rebuild the carb. Hoping its something simple like a stuck float or the like. But otherwise it runs like a dream and has some power unlike the 318 that was in it.

Progress is good, accomplishment is better, stay on this track, and you'll have 'em all running in no time!

Other than Monday some, I havent had much time to work on it. Tore the carb down and it didnt look bad, but I bought a kit anyway and also decided to buy a float while I was at it. I'll probably put that in in a couple days and see how it does. It ran horrid rich when I last drove it, so I think the float may have sunk or something. Didnt hear any gas in it but its one of those plastic ones too.

I'm going to take my pass. manifold into a machine shop and have the smog pump hole tapped and plugged, so I dont have to make a plate for it. Was looking for bolts, looks like 8 hp flathead Briggs and Stratton head bolts will work just fine, a little short but I think they will be fine. Sometimes ya gotta use whatcha got out here, and they just happened to work! They also work great for damper-pulling.
