Interesting conversation...

I had a good conversation with my friend Kevin this morning, and we got into the subject of throwing things away, selling for scrap, etc. What started it was that another friend had just recently scrapped five 318s, because he didn't need 'em and they were consuming space.

His point was that big-block stuff has gotten to be valuable because guys that don't (or didn't) see value in them years ago scrapped so many of them, even 440s so even though they were once commonplace, now they demand a premium even in this economy. "In 10 years, you'll be looking at $750 for a good 318 LA core" was one of his comments.

I'm starting to think he may be right. They don't make this shit anymore, unless you want to buy wildly-overpriced stuff. I've been trying to sell a good core 360 long-block for months now for $150 and I've not gotten even a single nibble on it. It seems like guys always want to toss their 318s or 273s for a bigger engine, but no one wants this thing. I'm considering scrapping it and if I do, the 360 LA just got that much more rare. Do I want to scrap it? No, but this place doesn't pay for itself, either. No, one engine doesn't make a difference but how many other guys are doing the same thing? I've junked a bunch of 318s and 383s because I saw no value in them. I never even considered keeping a 273 or 361.

I have limited space, and an even-more limited budget. I have two 340s and two 360s; why hang onto my 318? Hell, why hang onto the 360 long-block, if I can get a decent scrap price out of it? Maybe I'll scrap my extra pair of J heads, too. I'd cringe to do it, but I like a warm house more than I like parts on the shelves of a cold one. I can go days without eating but the dog can't make it 12 hours. I may even scrap my LA tunnel ram. If 68R/T puts me off on that trans too long, it'll be on a trailer too (no offense, 68). I'd love to continue to hoard, but I think a lot of stuff will be going to the scrapyard... and in a few years, I'll be hated for doing so because someone can't find an 8¾" gear case, a set of J-heads, or a C-body axle housing and shafts that can be cut down to fit an A-car.

It's all going away, guys and gals... and I don't mean my stuff alone. I'm just one of how many people in the same position. Sure, Ted Stephens will have whatever I've got, but he wanted $1500 for a '69 B-body front bench-seat frame with no usable cover or foams as of 4 years ago. Now's the time, my friends. Stuff's being melted down every day. If you think you're going to need it, get it while it's still here. If it turns out you don't need it, it's only going to be more rare when you decide to get rid of it.

This is not a shameless plug in which I'm trying to sell my stuff... this is just what hit me like a ton of shit talking to Kevin earlier. Every day, this stuff becomes more rare and people in my position are taking the same stance. I'd rather eat.

Sorry for the rant.

that shit hit me ages ago when a scrap guy knocked on my door wanting to buy my 67 cuda for 150$..i about drop kicked his ass ......think of how many of these guys swingle little old ladys and the "unknowing" out of good running cars and stuff..its just sad

doc if it come time for you to scrap the tunnel let me know..ill give ya more than scrap for it...i just dont have a use for it right now..ya know?...hell id snag the 360 from ya too if shipping wouldnt kill it

if i could find a 273 to snag id horde every 1 i found..they are the forgotten......

We have a 440 in the corner that we just can't bring ourselves to get rid of.....mostly because one day we won't be able to find one.

Exactly my point, DG. I'm not a big-block guy anymore, but had I not sold 'em off, I would hesitate to do so now even if I never planned to use one.

I know what you mean Doc. I've tossed a dozen, at least, 318's, 904's, even a 360 I couldn't take with me. Not to mention 8 3/4's a couple 489 centers, a truck 4 speed and a divorced NP203, because I needed money or was moving.

Before I moved back to Texas this last time I had a fire sale, 75 Duster w/ an 8 3/4, front disc brakes, a complete 360 w/ J heads, another machined 360 block, a machined 383 block and a bed full of misc other parts because I no place to put it down here, and no place to keep it up there.

I did save all my tools, 906 heads which I'm not going to use anyway, and a virgin '76 440 block because I was hoping to keep for a future project, and some smaller odd and ends.

And if I come across deals on more 440's I will grab and hold them...

I have an awesome 360 for someone ... but i could not give it away either so i crammed it in a corner and buried it for a different project ... someday ... its beside a 440 in that deep pile

ive got a pair of 440s and a handfull of 318s even a slanty ...i wont part with them

seriously doc hit me up if your planin to scrap and we can hash something out

If 68R/T puts me off on that trans too long, it'll be on a trailer too (no offense, 68).

Not without a forewarning, :helpme: please.

I was hoping to take a cruise up in my 68 sea-dan, but it's the wrong time of the year.

When I lived in Oregon, I had a 30X60 shop, so collecting parts and engines was no big deal. Now with only a single car garage, it's a different story. I now need to alternate vehicles in the garage when I want to work on them, and the 440 on the stand has to be rolled outside. I had a fresh 413 shortblock and a standard bore 383 shortblock, and gave them both away just to free up space to work on the car.:( Scrapping or getting rid of things we may need someday sucks, but I find that once they're gone, I don't miss 'em.

I wouldn't do that to you, 68. I can't work out there right now anyhow, so it's just resting under the LeBaron. It's the wrong time of year for everyone right now because of Christmas, but a lot of this stuff's been for sale for months. The side-saddle linkage setup for my tunnel ram costs around $200 new, if you can even find it. I'm asking (OBO) that for the intake with the linkage--hell, I'd throw in a couple of modded Holley 1850s that need cleaning, assembly, and either secondary metering blocks or plates. With gas over $3/gallon, not a lot of guys are doing dual-quad tunnel rams at the moment. It's just frustrating. Could I sell the stuff on eBay? Probably, but thanks to that asshole in WA state that screwed me on the '73 Road Runner hood, my eBay selling and PayPal were unceremoniously killed due to a "fraud alert" that cost me over $600. No, they will not reinstate them. I've tried.

It's just in the current economy, no one's buying--even at fire-sale prices. I offered to sell one of my 340 blocks to a guy for $350. Yeah, it needed a dry sleeve in #8 because one of the circlips rubbed the cylinder wall, but otherwise it's in great shape. It's all cleaned, magnafluxed, and rough-bored to .025" over. I had nearly that much into the machine work. Finish-hone it to your pistons. Nope... too much money. Priced an MP 340 replacement block lately? Over $2800, before shipping! He finally found one two years later, but he bought the whole car and it's too rare to not keep together and restore the car. So, he's still looking for a 340 block. Well, mine is no longer for sale, because now I plan to actually use it. I'll store my other 340 block, which I've owned (on and off--long story) for 20 years. It came out of my '73 Charger (WH23H3A201396), which is long parted and partially crushed. That block's sleeved in #8 as well, and clean at .017" over. I may never use it, but that's OK--I couldn't bear to have it grenaded a second time.

Frustrated as I am, I'll probably just sit on the stuff... even that which I don't use, I'll likely pay triple my asking price to reacquire should I ever need it again.

69.5: make me an offer on the tunnel ram. I'm never going to use it; you at least might. Fishy seems to have had a lot of fun with those psychotic gears I sold you so many years ago. :D

I don't know that I'd miss 'em either, but once they're scrapped they ain't never coming back... and the reproduction stuff is just stupid when it comes to hard parts. $320 for a reproduction iron 489 case? I can buy four complete, drum-to-drum 8¾" axle assemblies for that, with Sure Grips in 'em!

Yeah and a couple guys I have beat light to light have doubted me when I tell them it's got 533s in the rear. No one has believed me yet. Oh well. :p Sadly when I get my taxes in and can afford new tags, rear tires:shifty::toot: and some fluid changes, the 533s will be swapped out for a set of 355s. :( Of course I'll have one last romp with the 533s before the swap though! ;) Those gears are beyond fun but, they kill my pocketbook driving it from pay check to pay check. :doubt:

That's a pretty good deal :hmmm:

Well, that's going to be a serious buzzkill...
Yeah, tell me about it!! :D Luckily they are easy enough to swap out should I decide to go with the 533s again. Eventually those gears will find their permanent home in 69.5's 69 Barracuda coupe. Just runnin em in the 67 for now cause we can. :D

There's been a few times I've hankered for lower gears in the waGOON, but with 3:23's I only get 13mpg, at best.

All the more reason I enjoy driving my 68 sea-dan with the 318 & 2:76's......

I never calculated the mpg in the Barracuda with the 533s. Something tells me it wasn't even 13 though :D Hell, I'd be surprised if it was even double digits!

You need to go yarding with Stretch and I. Find a weekend up here; I'll provide food and lodging (because presumably I'll be employed by then). Lots of 3rd-gen B-cars in our yard of choice.
Yeah I do! I'll have to do that this coming year.

Now combine the two, toss three carbs at it, and you have my '72 Charger when the trans lost 3rd. One trip, 2500 miles, 594 gallons of gasoline... she was sorta singin' in Indiana where the speed limit was 75MPH (and everyone's doing 80+). Had there been a radio, there would have been no point in using it.
