I'll have my disappointment supersized, please

Rather than typing it all out again here, this is a copy/paste from a diesel board of what I found out about my transmission situation with the dually:

"I've been thinking about swapping my '98 12v dually to an automatic. After all, you can only shift an nv4500 so fast, especially with a heavy dual disk clutch. So, I called Dave Goerend and discussed this with him. Building a transmission to be safe behind what I eventually plan for this truck (800 hp) will basically require the best of everything, and I've never heard one ill word about Dave Goerend.

What he told me has me reeling-I'm looking at about $6800 plus shipping. But, since I don't have a core it'll be about $1000 more, pushing the total to roughly $7800. When you add shipping in we're talking a little over 8 grand. I don't think Goerend's prices are particularly out of line with anyone else's, at least from what I read about them, so that ought to be a close estimate anywhere.

If this is right I'm done. I'm sorry, but 8 grand for a freaking 4 speed auto transmission is retarded, and I'm not gonna do it. If it'll take that much money to make one reliably hold up to what I want to do then I better find some other auto trans that will work for a sane price, or I'm gonna sell the damn truck. It's just stupid, and there has to be a limit at which I won't allow the truck to swallow any more money. This is that point.

I was willing to spend about 6 grand, so if there's an alternative out there somewhere for an auto trans that will fit in the truck and will hold up for that much or less, I'm all ears. If not, I'll be putting the truck up for sale and getting out of diesel performance."

If you want to read the rest of it, here's the thread: http://www.dieselram.com/forum/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=231039&page=1&fpart=1

I've since thought some more about it and decided that if I can't get an auto that I'm willing to pay for, I'll keep the truck because it will run on waste motor oil and cut my fuel bills way down. But, there won't be much more in the way of mods for it. The more powerful it gets, the faster I have to shift to keep up with it. It's a real letdown to find all this out-I had planned on a healthy set of twins (turbos) for it along with an aftermarket cam, ported head, headstuds, and marine engine headgasket. Guess not now. In it's current state of tune it makes right at 400 hp at the wheels without the nitrous on a really stingy dyno. I guess that's ok for now, though I know it's capable of much more on a stock bottom end.

$8000 for a transmission? I don't blame you for bailing out, especially since you had other plans that could eat up the other cost. I say have fun with what you have and save money on fuel with the waste oil.

[smilie=2: WOW, 8k for a trans...

But how much more reliable/consistant will it be once you put the money into the trans though? And how often will you have to get it checked/serviced once you start putting more power to it? Would the sale of the old trans/clutch offset the price of the auto or did you already factor that in? I know that's alot of money, but will the upgrade be worth the trouble and money spent? ...I just hate to keep putting money into a setup that I know needs to go eventually

You can pay now, or you can pay MORE later...

just my 2c

thats a helluva lotta money for a trans.... makes me wanna think twice about gettin a diesel and tryin to do some performance mods to it....

I've only paid over $8K for one vehicle. Every car/bike/truck I've ever owned has been under $8K but for the wagon I bought new. And that was a mistake.
Wow - good luck with that.

That kind of money is only required when you want to REALLY turn the wick up on it. Most diesels aren't in the 800 hp range, which is where I was aiming to be. As far as the pay now or more later, I simply won't build the engine up that much if a transmission costs that much. I'll go do something else, like put the mustang into the 8's.

That's a huge bill to swallow for a trans. However, it still runs pretty damn good as it sits, and isn't too expensive to operate.
